Organising for someone else?

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it is worth asking first. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Allergies and dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans
  • Plates are easier for older guests than rolls
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork

One contact for the day helps, so the family can focus on guests.

China crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

Planning the cooking spot

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Look for:

  • A friend or relative we can call
  • A hall or room for eating
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster

As a London location, Shoreditch is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access takes planning: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

Prices and what affects them

The biggest factors are:

  • Access to the cooking area
  • Travel to Shoreditch
  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Time on site

For larger numbers, a hog roast is typically good value, since one roast goes a long way. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

What to tell us

To check availability and the cooking area, we will need:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Any venue rules
  • The venue or postcode
  • A picture of the cooking area

We need a few details to quote: the date and serving time, the venue or E1 postcode, rough numbers and which extras you’d like. Use our quote form.

Shoreditch questions

What’s the nearest station to Shoreditch?

Shoreditch has its own station: Shoreditch High Street station.

Could you cook in Artillery Ground?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Check with them first.

Can you cater at home?

Wherever the family gathers, if the roaster can cook outside.

What if it rains?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower doesn’t stop us. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

Is mains power needed?

No, the roast is cooked on gas. Tell us what’s available and we’ll plan around it.

How long does the roast need?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

Yes, for confident cooks. Ask and we will talk you through it.

Can you cater a wake at short notice?

Normally. Get in touch when the date is set and we will tell you quickly.

The process

When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. Autumn and winter afternoons in Shoreditch get dark early: about 7:05pm in late September and 3:55pm in December, so we plan lighting for later gatherings.

  1. Tell us the date, venue and rough numbers.
  2. We confirm availability and send a simple quote.
  3. We roast quietly during the service.
  4. Food is ready as guests gather.
  5. We pack up quietly.

How to prepare

  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
