Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a cold buffet, a warm plated meal is more comforting. A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, since one roast goes a long way. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

How our funeral wake catering works in The Hummicks

Served on plates with salads and potatoes, a hog roast is a full meal. Chicken, halloumi skewers and a vegan option are there for anyone who doesn’t eat pork. On the menu are roast pork in rolls or on plates, apple sauce and rotisserie chicken, and we’re frequently booked for celebrations of life and memorial gatherings.

In a small place like The Hummicks, a wake might be at home, in a barn or at the village hall. Tell us about lanes and the ground. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

The menu, dish by dish

Stuffing and apple sauce

A spoonful of apple sauce and a slice of stuffing turn a pork roll into a hog roast roll, just as they should.

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it’s needed, which keeps it hot and moist.

Allergies and dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Keep the alternatives labelled
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen list

We arrive in good time and roast quietly, out of the way of arriving guests.

Add chicken as an alternative.

Planning the cooking spot

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Look for:

  • A level outdoor area
  • A short route for the equipment
  • A safe distance from the hall

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

The Hummicks: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the New Forest National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

Is The Hummicks too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

What should we sort out beforehand?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is generally fine if the venue is happy.

Can you cater a wake at short notice?

Typically. Contact us when the date is set and we will tell you quickly.

Can you do gluten-free?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we will bring them. We will give you full allergen information for every dish.

What about guests who don’t eat pork?

We can add lamb or chicken, plus halloumi skewers for vegetarians and a vegan burger or sausage. Halal meat isn’t something we offer.

What happens on the day

A hog roast is always cooked outside, under a gazebo on level ground, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We agree exactly where before the day. In winter, it is dark in The Hummicks by about 4:00pm, so for an afternoon wake, light near the serving area and the door helps. In summer, there’s daylight until about 9:25pm.

  1. Tell us the date, venue and rough numbers.
  2. We reply quickly with a price.
  3. We roast quietly during the service.
  4. We serve calmly as people arrive.
  5. We clear away discreetly.

Preparing for the day

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
  • Gather dietary requirements early

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what affects the price:

  • The journey to the venue
  • Time on site
  • Numbers
  • Which meats and sides you choose

The main driver is numbers: bigger groups typically cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

What to tell us

When you get in touch, it helps to include:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Rough numbers
  • The date and time of the event
  • What the outdoor space is like

Every wake is quoted on its own, because numbers, menu, serving time and travel vary. Ask us for a quote for your wake: use our quote form.
