How our hog roast for events works in South Heath

Shows and festivals last all day, and a hog roast can serve through the day, carving as the queue grows. On the menu are halloumi skewers, hog roast rolls and apple sauce, and we are often booked for small festivals and church and village fêtes.

Rural events near South Heath can be a long way from anywhere to eat, so a hog roast goes down well. We plan the timings around your day, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Allergies and dietary needs

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Tips:

  • Put the menu and allergen information on display
  • Gluten-free rolls can be brought on request
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Share the event’s food safety requirements with us

We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting, timed for the gates opening.

The process

We arrive hours before you want to eat, since slow roasting cannot be rushed. Your visitors will smell it long before they see it. At midsummer, events in South Heath stay light until about 9:25pm, so evening trading usually finishes in daylight in high summer. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, the pitch needs lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. We check access to the pitch and send a price.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We carve and serve through the agreed hours.
  5. Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day

About the food

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: golden, crunchy and salty.

Rotisserie chicken

Rotisserie chicken is there for anyone who’d rather not have pork, and it suits fussy eaters.

Catered or do it yourself?

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is typically easier.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.
