How our hog roast for events works in The Valley

Festivals and shows run for hours, and we serve through the agreed hours, carving as the queue grows. We’re often asked to cater small festivals and town and village days, serving rotisserie chicken, apple sauce and halloumi skewers.

At a fête or show near The Valley, we can cook in a field. Tell us about the ground and the way in. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

Questions from The Valley

Can you do a hog roast in Spuckles and Kennelling Woods?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first.

How far is The Valley from London?

About 42 miles from central London, and well within our area.

What happens after service?

Our staff clear the serving area, and we take our equipment with us.

How do you work out quantities?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we’ll confirm everything in writing.

Who serves?

No need for your own staff: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Can you do a school fair?

Yes, with the school’s permission. Send us the details.

What should we sort out beforehand?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We’ll bring the rest.

Do you provide china?

We bring plates as standard. If you’d like china, ask and we’ll add it to the quote.

The menu, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

For visitors who don’t eat pork, rotisserie chicken is the easy answer, and children usually like it too.

Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)

Tell us how many vegans to expect, and we’ll plan the vegan burgers or sausages.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a barbecue stall, carving is faster than grilling to order. When comparing prices, compare the same things: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value.

What you get with us

  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Crackling for everyone who wants it

See how we price and the cost guide.

Space, access and the venue

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Room for a queue that does not block paths
  • The landowner’s or council’s agreement
  • A firm way on and off the field

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Prices and what affects them

The price comes down to:

  • Season and day of the week
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Crockery choices
  • Distance from us

Numbers make the biggest difference: bigger groups typically cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

What to tell us

To check the date and the space, tell us:

  • Your menu choices
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • An estimate of numbers
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo

Send us the date, the address or ME13 postcode and rough numbers, along with your serving time. We will confirm availability and send a price. Send us your details through our quote form.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some visitors won’t eat pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Remember stuffing generally contains gluten
  • Show allergens at the stall
  • Share the event’s food safety requirements with us
  • Tell us if there’s a vegetarian or vegan focus

We serve as the queue moves.

Ask about gluten-free rolls.

Running an event in The Valley

The Valley is about 6 miles south-west of Faversham, in Kent. Events in The Valley are part of our patch. We cater all 922 towns and villages across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Canterbury, about 12 miles away.

An event in Spuckles and Kennelling Woods means agreeing traders and vehicle routes with the landowner, normally the council. For a church fête or fundraiser, at a church such as Church of St Lawrence, a hog roast adds hot food to the cakes and tombola. Within about 8 miles is the Kent Downs National Landscape, where events may have extra rules on cooking and waste; we work to the site rules.

Here we cover the ME13 postcode area, and we can cater your event anywhere in it. For events just outside The Valley, we cover Stalisfield Green (1 mile south), Stalisfield (1 mile south), Eastling (2 miles north), Throwley Forstal (2 miles east) and Throwley (2 miles north-east). Larger places within reach include Maidstone (12 miles west), Ashford (8 miles south), Canterbury (12 miles east), Sittingbourne (7 miles north-west), Whitstable (12 miles north-east) and Faversham (6 miles north-east).

Other landmarks nearby include Newnham Castle (2.3 miles north).

For event organisers in The Valley

Event organisers often ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll confirm what we can provide.

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

How the day works

The roaster is gas-fired, so we do not need mains power to cook. In December, The Valley is dark by about 3:50pm, so the pitch needs good lighting and a clear route for the queue.

  1. You tell us the event, the pitch and the expected crowd.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting.
  4. We carve rolls to order as the queue moves.
  5. Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.

Preparing for the day

  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
