How our hog roast hire works in Caterham
There is nothing quite like the smell of a hog roast drifting across a garden or field. We roast slowly on site in Caterham, then serve it in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Popular choices include coleslaw, halloumi skewers and rotisserie chicken, and we are often booked for weddings, day or evening and christmas fairs.
Most bookings in a town like Caterham are at homes, halls, clubs and workplaces. Each works well, given level ground with clearance overhead. Everything is cooked on the day, at your venue, low and slow, for hours, then carved fresh for your guests.
A hog roast or other catering?
Next to a barbecue, one roast feeds everyone at once, instead of food coming off the grill in batches. Our guide compares the two. When comparing prices, compare the same things: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote isn’t always the best value.
Why book with us
- Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
- Carved to order by a chef
- Staff to serve, so you don’t have to
- Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it

What we serve, dish by dish
Stuffing and apple sauce
Apple sauce brings sweetness and sharpness go with the pork perfectly. Note that stuffing normally contains gluten.
Rolls and gluten-free rolls
Everything goes into a soft roll, perfect for eating on the move. Ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them.
Diets, allergies and alternatives
Most people love a hog roast, but it is pork. Some ways to look after everyone:
- Add a dietary question to your invitations
- Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
- Find out who doesn’t eat pork, and order an alternative for them
- We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed
On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We arrive hours ahead, set up, roast, carve and serve, then clear up.
China crockery is available on request, at an extra cost.

What the cooking area needs
Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. The ideal spot has:
- Nothing overhead that could catch the heat
- Vehicle access close to the cooking area
- A step-free route to wheel the equipment in
If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

FAQs for Caterham
Can you cater after a service at Sacred Heart Church?
Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.
How far is Caterham from London?
About 15 miles from central London.
What should we sort out beforehand?
Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.
Will people get crackling?
Yes, the crackling is shared out as we carve.
Can you roast in the rain?
We cook under a gazebo, so rain isn’t a problem for the roast. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.
Do you provide china?
Plates come as standard. If you’d like china, ask and we will add it to the quote.
How much does a hog roast cost?
It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Send us the details and we’ll quote.
When do you start roasting?
It depends on the size of the hog and the weather, but it’s several hours. We will confirm our arrival time when we quote.
What a hog roast costs
We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:
- The date and time of year
- Numbers
- How long the roast and service take
- Distance from us
The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.
Details that help
To get the best quote, send us:
- Any venue rules
- Your menu choices
- Allergies we should know about
- Where the event is
Busy weekends book up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: fill in our quote form.
How it works
When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, worked back from your serving time. Late September evenings in Caterham lose the light at about 7:05pm, and at Christmas it comes at about 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.
- It starts with your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
- We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
- We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
- Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
- Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.
Preparing for the day
- Check there’s a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
- Measure the narrowest gate or passage
- Confirm numbers ahead of the day

Catered or do it yourself?
DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.
We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.
