About the food

Stuffing and apple sauce

Sage and onion stuffing and apple sauce are the classic partners, balancing the rich, salty pork.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: golden, crunchy and salty.

Hog roast hire in Tyler's Green, carved to order

We roast the hog at your event, not in a kitchen miles away, which means it is carved hot, with crisp crackling. Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options can go alongside. Typical bookings include staff days and open days and sports clubs and societies, serving rotisserie chicken, halloumi skewers and salads.

In a hamlet or village like Tyler's Green, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Mention gates and soft ground when you get in touch. Timings are planned around your event, working back from when you want to eat, so the food is ready at the right moment.

Planners, venues and businesses

For venues and planners, we can fit around your other suppliers.

For events on land you don’t own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Planning a hog roast in Tyler's Green

Tyler's Green is about 2 miles south-east of Caterham, in Surrey. Tyler's Green and the surrounding area are covered for events. Tyler's Green is one of 395 towns and villages in Surrey we cover. Our bookings stretch from Tyler's Green to London (17 miles away).

For a fundraiser at a school like Godstone Village School, the roaster can cook on a pitch agreed with the school. For guests coming by train, Caterham station, about 1.9 miles north, is the nearest station.

Events anywhere in RH9 start with an outdoor spot for the roaster. We can cater an event on streets such as Selbourne Square, Godstone Hill and Bakers Mead or the roads around them, as long as there’s somewhere outside to cook. DIY versus a catered hog roast

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Some ideas:

  • Find out who does not eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled

The roaster needs looking after for hours, and that is what we are there for. You can get on with your event.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

How the day works

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Evenings in Tyler's Green stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; once it is dark, we need light at the carving station.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about tight access
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

A hog roast or other catering?

A hog roast has one downside: it is pork. So we offer lamb, chicken and vegetarian and vegan choices too. Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

Why book our hog roast in Tyler's Green

  • Crackling for everyone who wants it
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it

Take a look at our pricing or what a hog roast costs.

Space, access and the venue

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, so a few things are worth checking:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A sheltered place for people to eat if it rains
  • Flat outdoor ground for the roaster and a gazebo

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

What a hog roast costs

The price comes down to:

  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • The journey to the venue
  • Plates or china
  • The number of people

The main driver is numbers: bigger groups generally cost less per head, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.
