How our hog roast hire works in Epsom Downs
In Epsom Downs, we cater birthdays, weddings, staff days and fêtes. The idea is always the same: slow roasting at your venue, then carving and serving. We’re frequently asked to cater weddings and receptions and wakes and memorial gatherings, with crackling, new potatoes and salads.
Somewhere as small as Epsom Downs, a field, yard or garden is often the spot. Tell us about narrow lanes or long drives, and level, firm ground is the key. Tell us about dietary needs and allergies when you enquire, and we’ll give you the allergen information for every dish before booking.
How we price a hog roast
We do not use a fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:
- Numbers
- How long the roast and service take
- Distance from us
- Which meats and sides you choose
Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.
What to tell us
A few details help us give you an accurate quote. Here’s what’s useful:
- A photo of the cooking area
- The address or postcode
- Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
- Any venue rules
Every quote lists the menu, the serving time, staff and plates, so you can compare caterers fairly. Send us your details through our quote form.

Why choose a hog roast in Epsom Downs?
Compared with food vans, a hog roast feeds a crowd quickly from one roast, with no waiting for individual orders to cook. Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

Epsom Downs questions
Do you come out to small places like Epsom Downs?
No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.
Which station is closest to Epsom Downs?
Epsom Downs station, in Epsom Downs itself.
Do we need a big space?
Many gardens are big enough, as long as we can get the equipment in. A photo helps us check.
Will people get crackling?
Crackling is part of every roll for anyone who wants it.
What should we sort out beforehand?
Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.
Do you cover the whole of Surrey?
We cover Surrey and the rest of London and the South East. Tell us the venue and we’ll quote.
What about guests who do not eat pork?
We can add lamb or chicken, plus halloumi skewers for vegetarians and a vegan burger or sausage. Halal meat isn’t something we offer.
Do you need power or water?
The roaster runs on gas, so we don’t need mains power to cook. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.
Planning the cooking spot
A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way:
- Any venue rules sorted in advance
- Nothing overhead that could catch the heat
- Parking near the spot
Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

DIY versus a catered hog roast
You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.
Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience, especially outdoors.
Step by step
A typical booking goes like this: the roaster goes up and the hog goes on, the pork cooks slowly for hours, and we carve and serve at the agreed time. Around midsummer it stays light in Epsom Downs until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.
- First, you send us your date, address, numbers and serving time.
- We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
- On the day we arrive hours before serving and start the roast under cover.
- At serving time, the chef carves and the team serves.
- Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.
Getting ready for the day
- Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
- Give us final numbers a week or so before
- Choose someone to meet us on arrival

Planning help
Looking after everyone
Tell us about dietary needs early and we will help. Some ideas:
- Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
- Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
- Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
- Count anyone who does not eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
Everything for serving comes with us, so you only need to provide the space.
Salads, coleslaw and potatoes make it a full meal, and they’re listed in your quote.
- Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
- Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
- Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
- Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
