A hog roast near New Zealand

How our hog roast hire works in New Zealand

We roast the hog at your event, not in a kitchen miles away, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp when it’s served. Add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options if you like. We are often asked to cater big birthdays and anniversaries and christmas parties, serving salads, halloumi skewers and crackling.

In a rural place like New Zealand, roast pork in a field is hard to beat. Let us know about access and ground conditions. We bring plates as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

How we price a hog roast

Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Menu choices and extras
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Crockery choices
  • Access to the cooking area

Midweek and quieter months are often easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Tell us your budget and we will suggest what works.

Getting an accurate quote

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • A picture of the cooking area
  • The date and time of the event
  • Rough numbers
  • The address or postcode

Busy weekends book up early, especially summer Saturdays and December Fridays. Send us your date for a quote: fill in our quote form.

Who books hog roast hire in New Zealand?

Rolls are easy to eat standing up, which makes a hog roast ideal for relaxed events, and plates turn it into a proper meal.

Our roaster has been booked for all sorts of events around New Zealand, such as:

  • Fêtes, fairs and shows
  • Corporate events
  • Gatherings after a funeral
  • Weddings and receptions

PTAs at schools such as Elmhurst School frequently look for a hot-food stall for fairs and sports days.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How long the roast takes and when they’ll arrive
  • Exactly what’s included in the price
  • The full menu and the sides
  • Plates, china and cutlery

How to compare hog roast caterers

Catered or do it yourself?

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

How it works

Slow roasting is the whole point: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. By late September, sunset in New Zealand is around 7:05pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We look at the cooking area and send a price.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We clear up and go.

How to prepare

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

Looking after everyone

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, and gluten-free rolls are available on request. Other tips:

  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed
  • Find out who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

The roaster needs looking after for hours, and that is what we’re there for. You can relax and enjoy the day.

Salads, coleslaw and potatoes make it a full meal, and they’re listed in your quote.

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken from the rotisserie gives people a non-pork choice, turned until the skin is golden.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: golden, crunchy and salty.

What the cooking area needs

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Somewhere nearby to park our vehicle
  • A way to wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Cover for your guests in bad weather

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

New Zealand: your questions answered

We are gathering after a service at St Peter's: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Which station is closest to New Zealand?

Aylesbury station, about 0.8 miles south of the centre.

Who serves?

No need for your own staff: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Is mains power needed?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

Is crackling included?

It is: slow roasting crisps the skin and we break it up for everyone.

Where does the hog roast go?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging trees. We will confirm the space with your quote.

What do people get?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

The hog is the centrepiece, but lamb and chicken can be added.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you’re a venue or event planner, we are happy to work alongside your team.

Event organisers frequently ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Tell us what you need and we will confirm what we can provide.

  • Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
