About our hog roast hire in Rudmore

The smell of roasting pork is half the appeal. We roast slowly on site in Rudmore, then serve it in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. We are often asked to cater birthdays and anniversaries and Fêtes, fairs and shows, with spit-roast lamb, new potatoes and hog roast rolls.

In a smaller place like Rudmore, a hog roast in the garden is often the simplest option: space to cook, no venue hire and no cooking for you. Tell us about access down the drive or side of the house. We bring plates as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

FAQs for Rudmore

We are gathering after a service at The Grapes: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Could you cook in Alexandra Park?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

Hours rather than minutes. We’ll confirm our arrival time when we quote.

How soon do you get booked up?

Popular dates go early. But it is always worth asking: send us your details through our quote form.

What space does the roaster need?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We will check it with you before booking.

How do we prepare?

Only the space and a contact number. Everything for roasting and serving comes with us.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

The hog is the centrepiece, but lamb and chicken can be added.

What is hog roast hire?

You choose the date, the menu and the serving time; we do the rest. Just give us an outdoor spot to cook.

Rudmore: venues, access and local tips

Rudmore is about 1 mile north-west of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. We take a hog roast to gardens, car parks, yards and venues around Rudmore and the surrounding area. Rudmore is one of 19 towns and villages in Portsmouth where we cater. We cater events right across the region, from Rudmore to Southampton (15 miles away).

For anyone arriving by rail, the closest railway station is Portsmouth & Southsea station, roughly 1.1 miles south of the centre. A green space like Alexandra Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, usually the council’s. Rudmore is within about 3 miles of the sea, and coastal sites can be windy. We plan a sheltered cooking spot on windy days.

This part of Portsmouth takes in PO2 and PO1. Local streets include Knox Road, Wharf Road and Croft Road; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Rudmore is on the M275 and A2047, so it’s easy for us to reach with the equipment. Close by, we cover events in North End (1 mile north-east), Tipner (1 mile north-west), Portsmouth (1 mile south-east), Landport (1 mile south) and Copnor (1 mile east).

A little further out are Portchester Castle (2.1 miles north-west) and Southsea (2.2 miles south). The countryside around Rudmore includes Milton Locks and Portsdown Hill.

  • Schools near Rudmore include Mayfield School (0.7 miles north-east) and St Edmund's Catholic School (1 mile south)
  • Local pubs include The Admiral Drake pub (within half a mile south-west)

A hog roast compared with other options

Compared with food vans, a hog roast feeds a crowd quickly from one roast. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

What you get with us

  • Planned to your running order
  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Choices for people who don’t eat pork
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow

Looking after everyone

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it’s needed
  • Ask about allergies when you send invitations
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly

The roaster needs looking after for hours, and that is what we are there for. You can get on with your event.

China crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

Prices and what affects them

Each price is built from:

  • Plates or china
  • Numbers
  • Access to the cooking area
  • The journey to the venue

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, which is built into the price.

Details that help

Here’s what we will ask:

  • Rough numbers
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Any dietary needs or allergies
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china

We price every booking individually, based on numbers, menu, timings and distance. Tell us about your event for a quote: fill in our quote form.

Where the roaster can go in Rudmore

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Things to check:

  • A step-free route to wheel the equipment in
  • A marquee, hall or barn as a wet-weather plan
  • Vehicle access close to the cooking area

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before you book.

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

The process

Serving is straightforward: the chef carves and the team serves, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. In Rudmore, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. In December it is dark by about 4:00pm, so the cooking and serving area needs lighting.

  1. We start with a few details about your event.
  2. We check the date and the cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. We roast slowly on site, then carve for your guests.
  5. We serve, tidy up and leave the spot clean.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Gather dietary requirements early
