Allergies and dietary needs

You’ll get allergen information for everything we serve. To help:

  • Remember that stuffing generally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, and order an alternative for them

If timings shift, tell us: we can hold the roast for a while.

We can supply china instead of standard plates, quoted separately.

Ruscote questions

Which station is closest to Ruscote?

Banbury station, about 1.5 miles east of the centre.

We are gathering after a service at St Paul's Church Centre: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is typically elsewhere. Send us the address.

Do you cover the whole of Oxfordshire?

We cover Oxfordshire and the rest of London and the South East. Tell us the venue for a quote.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We don’t offer halal meat.

What happens when we hire a hog roast?

You choose the date, the menu and the serving time; we do the rest. Just give us an outdoor spot to cook.

How much will it be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we’re on site. Send us the details and we will quote.

Do we need to provide electricity?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. Power can help with lighting after dark.

Is crockery included?

Plates are included. China is available at an extra cost.

Should I cook it myself?

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Step by step

When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. By late September, sunset in Ruscote is around 7:10pm, and in December it’s nearer 3:55pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  1. First, you send us your date, address, numbers and serving time.
  2. We check the date and the cooking area, then send a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. We carve and serve when you’re ready to eat.
  5. We pack everything away when everyone has eaten.

Preparing for the day

  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains

Planning a hog roast in Ruscote

Ruscote is about 1 mile west of Banbury, in Oxfordshire. We’re happy to travel to Ruscote for events. Ruscote is one of 443 towns and villages in Oxfordshire where we cater. Our nearest city page is Oxford, about 22 miles away.

Churches such as St Paul's Church Centre rarely have room for a roaster, but a hall or home close by generally does. A green space like People's Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, normally the council’s.

Events anywhere in OX16 and OX15 start with an outdoor spot for the roaster and a serving time. Local streets include Abbey Road, Lunnun Road and Bailey Road; an event on any of them works well with outdoor space and a way in. Other places close to Ruscote we cover include Neithrop (1 mile north), Banbury (1 mile east), Drayton (1 mile north-west), North Newington (1 mile west) and Broughton (2 miles south-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Bicester (14 miles south-east), Bure Park (14 miles south-east), Chipping Norton (11 miles south-west), Woodstock (15 miles south), Bloxham (3 miles south) and Charlbury (14 miles south).

How to compare hog roast caterers

Working with your venue

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Before you choose a spot

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Somewhere nearby to park our vehicle
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • A sheltered place for people to eat if it rains

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think before you book.

The menu, dish by dish

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it is needed, so it stays hot and juicy right to the last roll.

Spit-roast lamb

Lamb on the spit roasts gently for hours, carved to order at the serving station, frequently with mint sauce.

How we price a hog roast

Here’s what affects the price:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • Numbers
  • Crockery choices
  • Travel to Ruscote

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, which is built into the price.

What we need to know

To check availability and the cooking area, tell us:

  • Your menu choices
  • Dietary requirements
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Rules from the venue or landowner

It is easy to get a price: date, place, numbers and serving time. We’ll reply with a clear price and what’s included. Use our quote form.
