How our hog roast hire works in South Hayling

The format is simple and it works for almost any crowd: pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling in a roll, and alternatives for anyone who does not eat pork. On the menu are crackling, salads and new potatoes, and we’re regularly asked to cater corporate events and village fêtes and school fairs.

A place like South Hayling frequently has a village hall, a recreation ground or a pub garden nearby; any can work, with the owner’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster. Plates come as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

Step by step

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. Late September evenings in South Hayling lose the light at about 7:05pm, and in December it is nearer 4:00pm. For anything after that, plan lights for the serving area.

  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

We will be with you for a good part of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

What a hog roast costs

The biggest factors are:

  • Plates or china
  • Menu choices and extras
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • The serving time and how long we are on site

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Full catering or machine hire? Catering means we do everything; DIY hire means you roast and carve yourself. Most hosts choose catering for anything bigger than a family party. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Why South Hayling hosts choose us

  • Served at the time you choose
  • A choice of salads and potatoes
  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • A clear quote with everything listed

Organising for someone else?

For workplace bookings, ask your facilities team about outside caterers and gas cooking. We work to the site’s rules.

If the event is on someone else’s land, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

About the food

Roast pork

Everything starts with the slow-roasted pork: carved in front of you, a mix of shoulder and leg, and served hot.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Crunchy coleslaw suits roast pork, while salads and potatoes make a plated meal.

Catered or do it yourself?

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

  • Cooked where you are, slowly, over several hours outdoors
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
