Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Next to a party buffet, hot carved pork feels more special. Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Why Paulsgrove hosts choose us

  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • Carved to order by a chef

About the food

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Soft rolls hold the pork, stuffing and apple sauce together, perfect for eating on the move. Ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them.

Rotisserie chicken

For guests who don’t eat pork, rotisserie chicken is the easy answer, and it suits fussy eaters.

Planning for dietary needs

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. Other tips:

  • Tell us how many vegetarians and vegans to expect
  • Let us know roughly how many children
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten

If the party runs late, the roast can wait a little, so just let us know.

Rotisserie chicken is popular at family parties.

Paulsgrove: your questions answered

Which station is closest to Paulsgrove?

Cosham station, about 1.2 miles south-east of the centre.

Can you roast near the sea around Paulsgrove?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Who serves?

You do not need anyone else: our chef carves and our team serves and clears.

What do people get?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Extras include lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers, a vegan option, salads and potatoes.

Can you do a hog roast in our back garden?

Frequently, yes, if there’s a level spot away from the house and trees, and a way to wheel the equipment through. Send us a photo.

What should we sort out beforehand?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We’ll bring the rest.

What’s the price?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Send us the details and we’ll quote.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, and a way to wheel everything in. A photo helps.

Full catering or machine hire?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

How the day works

When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, worked back from your serving time. In Paulsgrove, late May sunsets come at about 8:55pm and midsummer ones at about 9:20pm, so an early-evening carve is usually in daylight. After about 4:00pm in December, we need light to carve.

  1. It starts with the date, the address and a rough guest list.
  2. We check the date and the garden or drive, then send a quote.
  3. We set up early and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve when you’re ready.
  5. We clear up and pack away.

Preparing for the day

  • Choose someone to meet us on arrival
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Let us know about tight access

Prices and what affects them

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Distance from us
  • Time on site
  • The number of people
  • How easy it is to reach the spot

What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. A long, slow roast means an early start, and the quote reflects that.

What we need to know

For a quick, accurate price, tell us:

  • Allergies we should know about
  • The venue or postcode
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Any venue rules

When you are weighing up caterers, ask each one exactly what’s included. We spell it out in ours. To get yours, send us your details through our quote form.
