Party hog roast in Rake, carved to order

A big birthday deserves a centrepiece, and a whole hog roasting in the garden is exactly that. The smell sets the mood. Whether it’s back-garden get-togethers and ruby, golden and diamond anniversaries, we can cook hog roast rolls, coleslaw and jacket potatoes.

Country parties near Rake suit a hog roast: slow-roasted and eaten outside. Have a covered area for guests in wet weather. The carving happens right in front of your guests, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

Rolls and stuffing normally contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Add a dietary question to the invite
  • Think about children’s portions
  • Count non-pork eaters so we can bring chicken or a vegetarian option
  • Keep the vegetarian option labelled

Make sure the gate or side passage is open when we arrive, so we can bring everything through.

Ask about china for a sit-down party, quoted separately.

What comes off the roaster

Our chef carves the pork as it’s needed, which keeps it hot and moist.

FAQs for Rake

We’re gathering after a service at Rake Mission Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is typically served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

What’s the nearest station to Rake?

Liss station, about 1.6 miles west of the centre.

How much will it be?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we will send a price.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. Please note we don’t offer halal meat.

When do you start roasting?

A whole hog roasts for several hours, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

What should we sort out beforehand?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Do we need cover?

The roaster has its own cover; plan shelter for guests in bad weather.

What about coeliacs?

We can provide gluten-free rolls if you ask. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

Step by step

The roaster cooks outdoors, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. In Rake, late May sunsets come at about 8:55pm and midsummer ones at about 9:20pm, so an early-evening carve is usually in daylight. Winter parties, dark by about 4:00pm, need lights by the roaster.

  1. Send a picture of where the roaster could go.
  2. We confirm it works and send a quote.
  3. On the day, we roast slowly under cover.
  4. Our staff serve rolls and sides.
  5. We clear up so you don’t have to.

Preparing for the day

  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Let us know about tight access

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

Organising for someone else?

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it is worth asking first. We will liaise with them on access and set-up.

Marquee suppliers normally set distances for cooking equipment, so let them know about the roaster. We will keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.
