Diets, allergies and alternatives

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Some ideas:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Put a dietary question on the invitation
  • Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Count non-pork eaters, so we can add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options

If speeches overrun or the band starts late, we adjust. Your coordinator can keep us posted.

Lamb alongside the pork gives guests a choice.

Wedding hog roast in Acol, carved to order

Barn, marquee and garden weddings around Acol suit a hog roast. We cook outside, under cover, and the food is served in the marquee or barn. Popular choices include crackling, new potatoes and carved roast pork, and we are often booked for vow renewals and blessings and evening receptions.

A wedding in a small place like Acol often means a field, a barn or a family garden. That’s where a hog roast shines: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Let us know about access and ground. How it works

Slow roasting is the whole point: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. In Acol, midsummer sunset is about 9:15pm, and by late September it’s nearer 7:00pm, so evening food is often carved in daylight in June and July. For autumn and winter weddings, when it is dark by about 3:50pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. Send us the date, venue and guest numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Before we arrive

  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Check there is a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps

Common questions in Acol

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes, of course. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

Is Acol too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Where will the roaster go at our wedding?

The roaster stays outdoors on level ground.

Do we need extra food?

We’ll plan quantities from your numbers, and the quote lists everything.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

How do you work out quantities?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will talk it through when we quote.

What comes with the hog roast?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

It depends on the venue. Ask your venue early, and we will liaise with them.

A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with a three-course plated meal, a hog roast is more relaxed and often better value. It still feels like a feast. UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Why us?

  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • All the equipment comes with us

Full catering or machine hire?

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is normally easier.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. With a hog roast, one roast feeds everyone at once.

What we serve, dish by dish

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Coleslaw is the natural partner for a pork roll, and salads and new potatoes work well on a plate.

Spit-roast lamb

Spit-roast lamb is popular alongside the pork, and handy for anyone who doesn’t eat pork.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Power for lights in the evening
  • Approval from the venue or marquee supplier
  • A way in for the roaster

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.
