How our wedding hog roast works in Berrick Salome

For the wedding breakfast, a hog roast becomes a plated meal: carved pork with salads, new potatoes or roast potatoes, with china available on request. We’re frequently asked to cater the main wedding meal and relaxed, low-key weddings, serving salads, spit-roast lamb and crackling.

Near Berrick Salome, weddings are often in fields, barns or gardens. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Let us know about access and ground. Everything is cooked on the day, at your venue, slowly, over several hours.

What affects the price in Berrick Salome

The biggest factors are:

  • How many people are eating
  • Site access
  • Time on site
  • Travel to Berrick Salome

For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, because one whole roast feeds plenty of people. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Full catering or machine hire?

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

Planning the cooking spot

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • Power for lights in the evening
  • Approval from the venue or marquee supplier
  • A serving area close to where guests eat

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly.

Berrick Salome questions

Is Berrick Salome too small for a hog roast?

No, we come to small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the Chilterns National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will work to whatever the site needs.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We will confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Do you do evening food?

Yes. We’ll agree a serving time around your running order.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

No, the roast is always cooked outdoors under cover, at a safe distance from walls and tents. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we’ll adjust.

Do you provide china?

We bring plates as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

How do you work out quantities?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we will talk it through when we quote.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a wedding barbecue, one roast feeds all your guests together without batches coming off a grill. Cost depends on numbers, menu choices and service time, along with distance and how easy the site is. There’s no one-size price, so we quote each one individually.

Why Berrick Salome hosts choose us

  • Sides to make it a full meal
  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Planned to your running order
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow

The process

We roast under cover, so a shower will not spoil the food. Your guests will still want somewhere dry to eat, such as a marquee, hall or barn. For a summer wedding in Berrick Salome, the sun sets at about 9:25pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so evening food is frequently carved in daylight in June and July. For autumn and winter weddings, when it’s dark by about 3:55pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. Choose the main meal, the evening food or both.
  2. You get a quote listing menu, staff and plates.
  3. We confirm the cooking spot and access with the venue.
  4. We arrive early and roast slowly on site.
  5. Our chef carves and the team serves and clears.

Getting ready for the day

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
