A hog roast near Culmers

Wedding hog roast in Culmers, slow-roasted on site

A slow roast suits a wedding day that runs late: it can be held for a while once cooked, so a long speech won’t ruin the food. Whether it is barn and farm weddings and blessings and renewals, we can cook halloumi skewers, new potatoes and spit-roast lamb.

Rural weddings around Culmers have a magic of their own, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan firm ground and a route for our vehicle. We bring the roaster, the cover and everything we need to cook and serve, and we pack away and leave the area as we found it.

Full catering or machine hire?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

If your venue does its own catering, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. There may be a fee. For larger numbers, a hog roast is usually good value, because one whole roast feeds a lot of people. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

Why book with us

  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • An itemised quote

Read our prices page or our hog roast cost guide.

The process

It is a relaxed, well-organised set-up. We agree arrival and serving times in advance, set up where we have agreed, and get on with roasting and serving. For a summer wedding in Culmers, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:00pm in late September, so evening food is often carved in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it is dark by about 3:50pm.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and whether it’s the wedding breakfast, the evening or both.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. We cook through the day and serve right on cue.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Name a contact for the day

Planning help

Planning for dietary needs

We give full allergen information for every dish. To help:

  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card
  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests

Evening food generally goes out an hour or two after the first dance, timed with you in advance.

Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in evening photos.

Working with your venue

If you are booking for a workplace, check with facilities about gas equipment and vehicle access. We’ll fit in with site rules.

Marquee suppliers typically set distances for cooking equipment, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

FAQs for Culmers

Can you do a hog roast in Mount Ephraim Gardens?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first.

Can you cater after a service at Church of All Saints?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is usually elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

What happens in bad weather?

The roaster is under cover, so a shower doesn’t stop us. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

How big a hog will we need?

We size the roast to your numbers, so tell us your best estimate. The quote sets it out.

How much will it be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Tell us your date and we will send a price.

What do people get?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. The food can be carried in and served indoors where the venue allows.

Can we add a second roast?

Of course: lamb and pork together give guests a choice.

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it is needed, so it stays hot and juicy.

Stuffing and apple sauce

Stuffing and a dollop of apple sauce make the roll, just as they should.

What affects the price in Culmers

Your quote depends on:

  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • Plates or china
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken
  • Season and day of the week

Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Tell us your budget and we will suggest what works.

What we need to know

Here’s what we’ll ask:

  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • The address or postcode
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • The date and time of the event

Not sure how many to cater for? A rough figure is fine for a first quote, and you can confirm nearer the time. Fill in our quote form.

Planning the cooking spot

We need room to cook safely and under cover. Things to check:

  • Light near the carving station after dark
  • A short walk from the serving station to the guests
  • A way in for the roaster

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.
