About the food

Rotisserie chicken

Rotisserie chicken is a simple, popular alternative to pork, roasted until golden.

Roast pork

The hog roasts slowly for hours, so the meat is tender and juicy, and it is carved fresh as people come up.

Wedding hog roast near Lightwater

After hours of dancing, guests are hungry. Rolls with roast pork and crackling are just the thing, and they’re easy to eat with a drink in hand. For barn and farm weddings and garden weddings at home, we can cook spit-roast lamb, salads and rotisserie chicken.

For a smaller place like Lightwater, a garden or farm wedding is often the dream. We need level ground, cover and a way in. We plan the timings around your day, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

FAQs for Lightwater

Could you cook in Brentmoor Heath?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Is Lightwater close to London?

Roughly 27 miles from the centre of London, and well within our area.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

Many do, but some only allow approved caterers or charge a fee. Ask your venue early, and we’ll work with them on the details.

Can you work around our timings?

We will be as flexible as we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will adjust.

Who serves?

Our chef carves and our staff serve, and we clear up when service is finished.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We clear the serving area and pack away, leaving the spot as we found it.

Is crockery included?

We bring plates as standard. If you’d like china, ask and we’ll add it to the quote.

What’s included?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Sides and extra meats are listed in your quote.

What a hog roast costs

Each booking is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Site access
  • Whether you want china
  • Distance from us

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.

What we need to know

Good details mean a good quote. Useful details:

  • Roughly how many people
  • Dietary requirements
  • A picture of the cooking area
  • The venue or postcode

Numbers not final yet? A rough figure is fine for a first quote, then confirm closer to the date. Fill in our quote form.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

We give full allergen information for every dish. To make the most of it:

  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Remember that stuffing generally contains gluten
  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us
  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card

On your wedding day, the food should look after itself. We roast through the afternoon and carve at the agreed time.

Gluten-free rolls can be provided for the evening food.

Full catering or machine hire?

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

The process

Serving is straightforward: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Evening food at a Lightwater wedding often goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:05pm in late September. A few lights by the serving table help guests and photos alike.

  1. Send us the date, venue and guest numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon; our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we leave quietly.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us a contact number for the day
  • Check there’s nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat
  • Send final numbers in good time
