Wedding hog roast in Portmore

How our wedding hog roast works in Portmore

For the wedding breakfast, a hog roast becomes a plated meal: carved pork with salads, new potatoes or roast potatoes, with china available on request. Popular choices include spit-roast lamb, carved roast pork and rotisserie chicken, and we’re often booked for marquee receptions and post-wedding gatherings.

Rural weddings around Portmore have a magic of their own, and slow-roasted pork carved for guests adds to it. Plan a firm route in, especially if it rains. We plan the timings around your day, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Crackling

Crackling is what people queue for: golden, crunchy and salty, straight off the hog.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

For vegetarians, halloumi and vegetable skewers are cooked separately from the meat, a hot, filling option of their own.

Common questions in Portmore

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the New Forest National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

Which station is closest to Portmore?

Lymington Town station, about 1.1 miles south-west of the centre.

Is a hog roast enough for a wedding?

For the main meal, add sides such as salads and potatoes; for evening food, rolls are generally enough.

How much room do you need?

A flat, open spot outside, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. A picture helps.

What do you need from us on the day?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Is crockery included?

Plates come as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

Will there be enough to go round?

We size the roast to your numbers, so a good estimate matters. We’ll confirm the menu in the quote.

Do you need power or water?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. Power can help with lighting after dark.

What happens on the day

A hog roast is always cooked outside, on a level, open spot under cover, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We’ll agree the spot with you beforehand. Evening food at a Portmore wedding frequently goes out just as the light fades: about 9:25pm at midsummer, 8:55pm in late May and 7:10pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

Looking after everyone

Most people love a hog roast, but it is pork. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen list
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us

If speeches overrun or the band starts late, we adjust. Just keep us informed.

Salads, new potatoes and roast potatoes make a full wedding breakfast.

Full catering or machine hire?

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Working with your venue

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before booking. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Planning on behalf of a committee? A single point of contact keeps things simple, especially on the day.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Served when you’re ready, and we tidy the serving area afterwards
