A hog roast near Portsmouth

Wedding hog roast near Portsmouth

A slow roast suits a wedding day that runs late: a cooked roast holds for a while, so the food copes with a delayed running order. Popular choices include halloumi skewers, new potatoes and salads, and we are regularly asked to cater marquee weddings and blessings and renewals.

A large place like Portsmouth offers hotels, function rooms and gardens. A hog roast suits any reception with outdoor space for the roaster. We bring plates as standard, with china available if you’d like it, at an extra cost.

What a hog roast costs

We do not use a fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • The date and time of year
  • How many people are eating
  • Distance from us
  • Time on site

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. A long, slow roast means an early start, and the quote reflects that.

What to tell us

To check the date and the space, we’ll need:

  • The address or postcode
  • Roughly how many people
  • Your date and serving time
  • Any venue rules

Organising for someone else?

Marquee suppliers usually set distances for cooking equipment, so tell them a hog roast is coming. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Event organisers frequently ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll tell you what we can send.

Catered or do it yourself?

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

FAQs for Portsmouth

How far is Portsmouth from London?

Roughly 64 miles from the centre of London, and well within our area.

We are gathering after a service at St Wilfrid: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is generally elsewhere. Send us the address.

Where do you cook at a marquee wedding?

Always outside, away from the marquee walls. We can serve inside the marquee if the supplier agrees.

What should we sort out beforehand?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we’ll fit around changes.

Can we just hire the roaster?

We do, if you’re happy to roast and carve yourself. We will explain the details with your quote.

Do we need our own staff?

You do not need anyone else: we carve, serve and tidy up.

What space does the roaster need?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We’ll check it with you before booking.

Planning for dietary needs

We give full allergen information for every dish. To help:

  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Share the menu with your venue coordinator
  • Give final numbers in good time
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests

On your wedding day, the food should look after itself. We roast through the afternoon and carve at the agreed time.

Some couples add lights around the serving area.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a three-course plated meal, a hog roast is more relaxed and often better value. It still feels like a feast. When comparing prices, compare the same things: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Why book with us

  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Carved by our chef in front of your guests
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • Our staff serve and clear

The process

We roast under cover, so a shower will not spoil the food. It’s worth planning a sheltered place for people to eat, too. Golden-hour photos in Portsmouth at midsummer come around 9:20pm, so we can time the carving before or after your sunset photos. In late May, sunset is about 8:55pm, and in late September about 7:10pm.

  1. Tell us whether it’s the wedding breakfast, the evening or both.
  2. You get a quote listing menu, staff and plates.
  3. We confirm the cooking spot and access with the venue.
  4. We arrive early and roast slowly on site.
  5. Our chef carves and the team serves and clears.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us a contact number for the day
