For planners, venues and organisers

If you are organising for someone else, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We’ll keep everyone in the loop.

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Wedding hog roast in Landport, slow-roasted on site

Evening wedding food has one job: feed hungry dancers. Rolls with roast pork and crackling are just the thing, and they’re easy to eat with a drink in hand. For evening receptions and garden weddings at home, we will put together a menu of crackling, spit-roast lamb and halloumi skewers.

In Landport, a local ceremony and a marquee reception is a lovely, personal choice. The roaster cooks a safe distance from the marquee. Tell us about access to the field or garden. Timings are planned around your wedding, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Landport: your questions answered

We are gathering after a service at Church of All Saints: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Send us the address.

Can you do a hog roast in Alexandra Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, typically the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is normally fine if the venue is happy.

Do we need extra food?

We will plan quantities from your numbers, and we’ll confirm it in writing.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We pack everything away after service, so you are not left with the mess.

Can you cook inside the marquee?

Always outside, away from the marquee walls. We can serve inside the marquee if the supplier agrees.

What if our venue has its own caterer?

Many do, but some only allow approved caterers or charge a fee. Ask your venue early, and we’ll liaise with them.

How do you work out quantities?

We size the roast to your numbers, so tell us your best estimate. We will confirm the menu in the quote.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

If your venue has an in-house caterer, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. There may be a fee. Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

How the day works

We get there well ahead of service, since slow roasting can’t be rushed. The smell usually brings people over long before we carve. At midsummer, sunset in Landport is about 9:20pm, so we can time the carving before or after your sunset photos. Sunset is around 8:55pm in late May and 7:10pm in late September.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We fit timings around your running order.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we leave quietly.

Before we arrive

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking

Should I cook it myself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is generally easier.

What we serve, dish by dish

Roast pork

We carve as we serve, which keeps it hot and moist.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Crunchy coleslaw suits roast pork, while salads and potatoes make a plated meal.

Prices and what affects them

Your quote depends on:

  • Menu choices and extras
  • The number of people
  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Site access

For larger numbers, a hog roast is generally good value, since one roast goes a long way. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

What we need to know

When you contact us, please mention:

  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Roughly how many people
  • Allergies we should know about
  • The date and time of the event

Not sure how many to cater for? Give us your best estimate and we will quote on that, and you can confirm nearer the time. Send us your details through our quote form.

Planning for dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Remember that stuffing usually contains gluten, so check the allergen list
  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • Note which guests do not eat pork, for lamb, chicken or a vegetarian choice
  • Give your coordinator the final menu

On your wedding day, the food should look after itself. We roast through the afternoon and carve at the agreed time.

Some couples add lights around the serving area; tell your venue or marquee supplier.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
