Full catering or machine hire?

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is usually easier.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

How it works

On the day, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, timed so it is ready when you want to eat. Evening food at a Roedean wedding frequently goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 8:50pm in late May, 9:15pm at midsummer and 7:05pm in late September. A few lights by the serving table help guests and photos alike.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and whether it is the wedding breakfast, the evening or both.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then send a quote.
  3. We agree arrival, cooking spot and serving times with you and your venue.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

Preparing for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Give us final numbers a week or so before

Common questions in Roedean

Could you cook in Whitehawk Hill?

Only if the landowner, usually the council, allows it. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What’s the nearest station to Roedean?

Brighton station, about 2.2 miles north-west of the centre.

When should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But it is always worth asking: fill in our quote form.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we’ll adjust.

How long does the roast need?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We work back from your serving time.

What if it rains?

Rain does not stop the cooking. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

Check with the venue first: rules vary. We will sort the details with them.

Is there a non-pork option?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. Please note we do not offer halal meat.

What we serve, dish by dish

Stuffing and apple sauce

Apple sauce brings sweetness and sharpness are the traditional pairing. Stuffing normally contains gluten.

Roast pork

Everything starts with the slow-roasted pork: carved in front of you, a mix of shoulder and leg, straight from the roaster.

For planners, venues and organisers

If the event is on someone else’s land, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it’s worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

How to compare hog roast caterers

Why choose a hog roast in Roedean?

Next to a wedding barbecue, one roast feeds all your guests together without batches coming off a grill. For larger numbers, a hog roast is typically good value, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.
