Wedding hog roast for Ovingdean

Common questions in Ovingdean

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes, of course. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the South Downs National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We’ll follow the site rules.

What if things run late?

We work back from when you want to eat, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

What if it rains?

Rain does not stop the cooking. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is generally fine if the venue is happy.

Can we just hire the roaster?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

Your venue decides: some welcome outside caterers, others do not. We’ll sort the details with them.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

Yes. We serve it on plates with salads and potatoes, with china available, and our staff serve your guests.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

If your venue does its own catering, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. Some venues charge a fee. Distance is part of the price: travel is included in your quote. Give us the address so the quote is accurate.

What you get with us

  • Served at the time you choose
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • Carved by our chef in front of your guests
  • An itemised quote

Take a look at how we price or the cost guide.

What affects the price in Ovingdean

Things that change the price:

  • The journey to the venue
  • Site access
  • How long the roast and service take
  • Whether you want china

Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. Every event gets its own quote, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

What to tell us

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • Roughly how many people
  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a photo
  • Where the event is

To get a quote, just tell us the date, where the wedding is and roughly how many. A photo of the cooking area helps. Use our quote form.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience, especially outdoors.

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

How the day works

We arrive hours before you want to eat, since slow roasting cannot be rushed. The smell typically brings people over long before we carve. Golden-hour photos in Ovingdean at midsummer come around 9:15pm, so we can time the carving before or after your sunset photos. Sunset is around 8:50pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Preparing for the day

  • Pick a flat, open area outside for cooking
  • Check there’s a route to wheel the equipment in, without steps
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance

Working with your venue

Event organisers often ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Let us know what your event requires and we’ll tell you what we can send.

For events on land you don’t own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
