Full catering or machine hire?

You could go for a cold buffet, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

How our wedding hog roast works in Shorwell

Not every guest eats pork, so we plan for that: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers and a vegan option. We do not offer halal meat. For evening receptions and marquee weddings, we will put together a menu of new potatoes, carved roast pork and crackling for your guests.

A wedding in a small place like Shorwell frequently means a field, a barn or a family garden. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Tell us about lanes, gates and ground conditions. Timings are planned around your wedding, working back from when you want to eat.

What we serve, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

Chicken off the rotisserie, carved or jointed can be served in a roll or on a plate.

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Rolls make a hog roast easy to eat anywhere. Gluten-free rolls can be provided on request.

What the cooking area needs

The right spot for the roaster makes everything easier. Ideally:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • Lighting for evening service

Shorwell is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we will plan the journey.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to a wedding barbecue, one roast feeds all your guests together. Midweek and quieter months are often easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Ask us and we’ll suggest the best fit for your budget.

Why Shorwell hosts choose us

  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • Carved by our chef in front of your guests
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow

Take a look at how we price or what a hog roast costs.

The process

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, with the sides served alongside. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. Evening food at a Shorwell wedding often goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:10pm in late September. A few lights by the serving table help guests and photos alike.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. We check the venue and the cooking spot and send a price.
  3. We fit our timings around your running order and the venue.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. We clear away once everyone has eaten.

Preparing for the day

  • Think about shelter for your guests
  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand

Shorwell questions

Is Shorwell too small for a hog roast?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

We are gathering after a service at St. Peter's Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is usually elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

What comes with the hog roast?

Rolls with roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Do you offer gluten-free rolls?

We can provide gluten-free rolls if you ask. Ask for the allergen list, as stuffing normally contains gluten.

How much room do you need?

A level, open area outdoors with room for the roaster, a gazebo and a carving table, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging trees. We will check it with you before booking.

Do you provide china?

We bring plates as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

Do you serve the food?

You don’t need anyone else: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

Add lamb, chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan option. We don’t offer halal meat.

What a hog roast costs

The price comes down to:

  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Numbers
  • Whether you want china
  • The journey to the venue

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, which is why each one gets its own quote.

Details that help

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Useful details:

  • The venue or postcode
  • Any venue rules
  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • A photo of the cooking area

We need a few details to quote: your date, your venue or postcode, how many people and any menu choices. Fill in our quote form.

Looking after everyone

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Some ways to look after everyone:

  • Give your coordinator the final menu
  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten

Our staff serve and clear quietly, so the party carries on around us.

Lamb alongside the pork gives guests a choice.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
