About wedding hog roast in the Isle of Wight

A slow roast suits a wedding day that runs late: a cooked roast holds for a while, so the food copes with a delayed running order. Typical bookings include wedding breakfasts and intimate weddings, serving crackling, new potatoes and spit-roast lamb.

The secret is time: the meat cooks gently until it is tender while the skin crisps into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving.

  1. Choose the main meal, the evening food or both.
  2. You get a quote listing menu, staff and plates.
  3. We confirm the cooking spot and access with the venue.
  4. We set up and roast for hours.
  5. We carve and serve, then clear away.

Local landmarks in Newport

Locally, our bookings take us close to Castle Inn, The Man in the Moon and Seaclose Park, among other places. Other local landmarks include Christ The King College (0.6 miles south-west), Island Innovation VI Form Campus (within half a mile south-east) and Nine Acres Primary School (less than half a mile south). Nearby you’ll also find Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and St Mary's Hospital (0.8 miles north). Open spaces near Newport include Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.

Weddings across the Isle of Wight: venues and settings

The Isle of Wight offers town venues in Newport, Ryde and Cowes and countryside settings across 102 villages and hamlets. We’ll agree where the roaster goes with your venue. 116 of the places we cover in the Isle of Wight are within about 6 miles of the sea, so we frequently plan a sheltered spot for the roaster.

Newport: Among the historic houses close to Newport are Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and Gatcombe House (2.5 miles south). Grand venues like these normally set rules for outside caterers, so ask before booking. Marrying at The Man in the Moon? A reception in a garden, barn or marquee close by gives the roaster an outdoor spot. At a December wedding in Newport, it’s dark by about 4:00pm, so the route from the reception to the hog roast needs lighting, while a June wedding has light until about 9:20pm.

Full catering or machine hire?

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Catered or DIY? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Looking after everyone

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. A few tips:

  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • If any guests need halal food, arrange it separately
  • Request gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Give your coordinator the final menu

Our staff serve and clear quietly, so the party carries on around us.

China crockery can be added for the wedding breakfast, quoted separately.

Working with your venue

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so check before you book. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Prices and what affects them

We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. The main factors are:

  • Access to the cooking area
  • Travel to the Isle of Wight
  • How many people are eating
  • Menu choices and extras

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Details that help

When you enquire, it helps to include:

  • Your date and serving time
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • A photo of the cooking area
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

Every quote lists the menu, the serving time, staff and plates, so you can compare caterers fairly. Send us your details through our quote form.

Space, access and the venue

Planning the cooking spot is the key. A quick checklist:

  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • Serving inside the marquee or barn if allowed

Your questions about a hog roast for your wedding in the Isle of Wight

Can you cater for vegetarians?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. We don’t provide halal meat.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will adjust.

Can we have a hog roast as the main meal?

Of course: carved pork on plates with sides, with our staff serving.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

Check with the venue first: rules vary. We’ll sort the details with them.

Where do you cook at a marquee wedding?

Always outside, away from the marquee walls. We can serve inside the marquee if the supplier agrees.

Can we add a second roast?

Of course: lamb and pork together give guests a choice.

Can you do our evening wedding food?

Yes, evening food is very popular. Hot pork rolls are perfect late in the evening.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside the pork
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
