Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a barbecue, a hog roast feeds everyone at once from one roast without batches coming off a grill. Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

Common questions in Freshwater

Can you roast near the sea around Freshwater?

Yes, of course. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

We’re gathering after a service at All Saints' Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

Many couples do exactly that, with alternatives for non-pork eaters.

Can we have both pork and lamb?

Lamb and chicken are both available as a second option.

Will our venue allow a hog roast?

Your venue decides: rules vary. We’ll sort the details with them.

How long does the roast need?

A whole hog roasts for several hours, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

What about guests who do not eat pork?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. Halal meat is not something we offer.

Do we need our own staff?

No need for your own staff: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Step by step

Serving is straightforward: the chef carves and the team serves, with the sides served alongside. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. At a December wedding in Freshwater, it’s dark by about 4:05pm, so the route from the reception to the hog roast needs lighting, while a June wedding has light until about 9:20pm.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Preparing for the day

  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat

Should I cook it myself?

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

For planners, venues and organisers

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it is worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

If the event is on someone else’s land, you will need the landowner’s permission for cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.
