How our wedding hog roast works in Skinner's Hill

After hours of dancing, guests are hungry. Rolls with roast pork and crackling are just the thing. Typical bookings include vow renewals and blessings and the main wedding meal, serving salads, crackling and spit-roast lamb.

A wedding in a small place like Skinner's Hill often means a field, a barn or a family garden. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Let us know about access and ground. Everything we need to roast, carve and serve comes with us, and we leave the spot tidy when we go.

For planners, venues and organisers

If the event is on someone else’s land, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Get that agreed before booking.

Some venues charge a fee if you bring in your own caterer, so it’s worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

Prices and what affects them

We don’t use a fixed price list, since every event is different. What matters most:

  • Distance from us
  • The serving time and how long we’re on site
  • Menu choices and extras
  • How many people are eating

Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Tell us your budget and we will suggest what works.

Details that help

When you get in touch, it helps to include:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Roughly how many people
  • Allergies we should know about
  • Which meats and sides you’d like

For a quote, send us a few details: the date and serving time, the venue or PO36 postcode, rough numbers and which extras you’d like. Send us your details through our quote form.

What we serve, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Halloumi and vegetable skewers are the vegetarian choice: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Add salads, coleslaw and potatoes to make it a proper meal.

Skinner's Hill questions

We’re gathering after a service at All Saints' Church: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

What about windy coastal sites?

Yes. Wind is something we plan for: a sheltered spot and secure cover.

Can you cook inside a hall or marquee?

It cooks outside, under a gazebo, on a level spot. Serving indoors is generally fine if the venue is happy.

How much will it be?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Tell us your date and we’ll send a price.

Can you do gluten-free?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we will bring them. You will get allergen details for everything.

Do you need power or water?

The roaster runs on gas, so we don’t need mains power to cook. Power can help with lighting after dark.

What should we sort out beforehand?

Just the agreed spot and a contact on the day. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

How far ahead should we book?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: use our quote form.

Step by step

A hog roast is always cooked outside, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. In Skinner's Hill, midsummer sunset is about 9:20pm, and by late September it’s nearer 7:10pm, so evening food is frequently carved in daylight in June and July. For autumn and winter weddings, when it is dark by about 4:00pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. We start with your date, venue, numbers and running order.
  2. We check the venue and the cooking spot and send a price.
  3. We fit our timings around your running order and the venue.
  4. We roast during the ceremony and drinks, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

How to prepare

  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Ensure we can wheel the roaster to the spot
  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance

Catered or do it yourself?

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

Is a hog roast right for your wedding?

Compared with a barbecue, one roast feeds all your guests together. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. Every event gets its own quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
