Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

If your venue does its own catering, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. Some venues charge a fee. The main driver is numbers: bigger groups usually cost less per head, since much of the cost is fixed.

What you get with us

  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Choices for people who do not eat pork
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • All the equipment comes with us

The menu, dish by dish

Roast pork

Everything starts with the slow-roasted pork: carved thick or thin, as people like it, straight from the roaster.

Crackling

For many people, the crackling is the best bit: golden, crunchy and salty.

How it works

When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. Evening food at a Sunnymead wedding frequently goes out just as the light fades: sunset is around 9:00pm in late May, 9:25pm at midsummer and 7:10pm in late September. Festoon lights by the carving station look lovely in the photos.

  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we leave quietly.

What a hog roast costs

The price comes down to:

  • Which meats and sides you choose
  • Site access
  • How many people are eating
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays

Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Ask us and we’ll suggest the best fit for your budget.

What to tell us

For a quick, accurate price, send us:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

Busy weekends book up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: send us your details through our quote form.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs space, cover and a safe distance from anything that could catch the heat. Before booking, check:

  • Space well clear of tents and trees
  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • A serving area close to where guests eat

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Should I cook it myself?

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

Planning for dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing generally contain gluten, and gluten-free rolls are available on request. Other tips:

  • Give your coordinator the final menu
  • Note which guests do not eat pork, for lamb, chicken or a vegetarian choice
  • Put a dietary question on the invitation
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten

Our staff serve and clear quietly, and leave you to celebrate.

China crockery can be added for the wedding breakfast, quoted separately.

Working with your venue

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before you book. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Marquee suppliers normally set distances for cooking equipment, so tell them a hog roast is coming. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

Sunnymead questions

Could you cook in Oxford University Parks?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Check with them first, and tell us what they say.

Which station is closest to Sunnymead?

Oxford Parkway station, about 1.4 miles north of the centre.

Do you do evening food?

Yes, evening food is very popular. Hot pork rolls are perfect late in the evening.

How much room do you need?

Roughly the footprint of a gazebo or two, on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and branches. We will check it with you before booking.

Is mains power needed?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

Where will the roaster go at our wedding?

Always outside, away from the marquee walls. Serving inside is fine where allowed.

Do venues allow outside hog roasts?

Check with the venue first: some welcome outside caterers, others do not. We’ll sort the details with them.

How big a hog will we need?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we’ll confirm everything in writing.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Carved to order by our chef, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
