Wedding hog roast for West Dulwich

How our wedding hog roast works in West Dulwich

A wedding hog roast can be the wedding breakfast, the evening food or both. We roast at the venue through the ceremony and drinks, then carve at the time you’ve set. Popular choices include carved roast pork, new potatoes and rotisserie chicken, and we’re often booked for evening receptions and vow renewals and blessings.

In West Dulwich, venues set rules on outside caterers and gas cooking. A courtyard, garden or yard is ideal, and we will work through it together. The hog is roasted on site at your wedding, low and slow, for hours, and carved only when you are ready to eat.

What we serve, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Halloumi and vegetable skewers are the vegetarian choice: squeaky, salty cheese with colourful veg.

Roast pork

Everything starts with the slow-roasted pork: carved thick or thin, as people like it, and served hot.

Before you choose a spot

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Ideally:

  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster
  • A level spot near, but not too near, the marquee
  • A short walk from the serving station to the guests

West Dulwich is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

A hog roast or other catering?

If your venue does its own catering, ask whether outside caterers are allowed for evening food. Some venues charge a fee. A hog roast is often good value for a crowd, since one roast goes a long way. Extras, china and longer service add to it.

Why us?

  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours
  • An itemised quote
  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit

What happens on the day

A hog roast is always cooked outside, under a gazebo on level ground, away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. At midsummer, sunset in West Dulwich is about 9:20pm, so we can time the carving before or after your sunset photos. Sunset is around 8:50pm in late May and 7:05pm in late September.

  1. You tell us your date, venue, numbers and whether it is the wedding breakfast, the evening or both.
  2. We check the venue and the cooking spot and send a price.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Afterwards we tidy our area and leave you to the party.

Getting ready for the day

Full catering or machine hire?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.

West Dulwich: your questions answered

Can you do a hog roast in Long Meadow?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first.

Can you get a hog roast into a London garden in West Dulwich?

Often, if there’s a rear gate, a front garden or a yard we can use. Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly.

Can we have both pork and lamb?

Add lamb or rotisserie chicken alongside the hog.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We clear the serving area and pack away, leaving the spot as we found it.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

Many couples do exactly that, with lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside.

Where will the roaster go at our wedding?

Outside, under its own cover, a safe distance from the marquee. Serving inside is fine where allowed.

Can you work around our timings?

Within reason, we can. Give us a contact on the day and we will adjust.

What if it rains?

We cook under a gazebo, so rain is not a problem for the roast. A marquee, hall or barn for eating makes all the difference.

Looking after everyone

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Request gluten-free rolls if needed
  • Put a dietary question on the invitation
  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us
  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before

We’ll be at the venue for most of the day, out of the way, by the cooking area.

Choose sides to make it a full meal.

Organising for someone else?

Venues frequently have rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Ask early, and pass on anything they need from us.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it is worth asking first. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.
