How to compare hog roast caterers

Wedding hog roast in West End, slow-roasted on site

We look after guests who do not eat pork: lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. Halal meat isn’t available. On the menu are rotisserie chicken, new potatoes and carved roast pork, and we’re regularly asked to cater evening receptions and vow renewals and blessings.

A wedding in a small place like West End often means a field, a barn or a family garden. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Tell us about lanes, gates and ground conditions. Plates come as standard, and china crockery is available on request, quoted separately.

What affects the price in West End

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • The number of people
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Distance from us
  • Which meats and sides you choose

What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

What to tell us

When you get in touch, it helps to include:

  • Your menu choices
  • Dietary requirements
  • An estimate of numbers
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture

Every quote lists the menu, the serving time, staff and plates, so it is easy to compare like for like. Use our quote form.

Before you choose a spot

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:

  • Power for lights in the evening
  • Flat ground outside the reception for the roaster
  • A safe distance from marquee walls, buildings and trees

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Popular choices

  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Halloumi skewers (V)
  • Vegan option (Ve)
  • Spit-roast lamb
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Roast or jacket potatoes
  • Crackling
  • New potatoes
  • Salads
  • Hog roast rolls

West End: your questions answered

Which station is closest to West End?

The closest is Hersham station, roughly 1.1 miles away.

Can you cater after a service at St George's?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you will gather.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

Of course: carved pork on plates with sides, and our staff serve your guests.

What comes with the hog roast?

The classic: pork in rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

Where will the roaster go at our wedding?

We cook outside, never inside the marquee.

How big a hog will we need?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we will confirm everything in writing.

Can you work around our timings?

We work back from when you want to eat, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

Can we have both pork and lamb?

Add lamb or rotisserie chicken as a second option.

Organising for someone else?

Planning on behalf of a committee? A single point of contact keeps things simple, particularly when timings shift.

Organisers may ask for documents such as a risk assessment or gas safety information. Let us know what your event requires and we will tell you what we can send.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Ask about dietary needs on your RSVP card
  • Share the menu with your venue coordinator
  • Give us vegetarian and vegan numbers
  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before

For evening food, we carve as the dancing gets going, timed with you in advance.

Some couples add lights around the serving area.

Is a hog roast right for your wedding?

Compared with a three-course plated meal, a hog roast is more relaxed and frequently better value. It still feels like a feast. When comparing prices, compare the same things: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. A cheaper headline price can leave things out.

Why book with us

  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • Staff to serve, so you do not have to
  • Timed around your day
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours

DIY versus a catered hog roast

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Step by step

On the day, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. For a summer wedding in West End, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, which means an evening hog roast is normally served in daylight in high summer. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. Share your date, venue, numbers and which meal you’d like.
  2. We check the venue and the cooking spot and send a price.
  3. Timings and the cooking spot are agreed with you and the venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

Getting ready for the day
