St Helen's barbecues: local tips

St Helen's is about 1 mile north-east of Hastings, in East Sussex. Hosts in St Helen's book us for events of all sizes. St Helen's is one of 289 places in East Sussex where we cater. You can also see our page for Brighton, about 31 miles away.

Thinking of a barbecue in Old Roar Gill and Coronation Wood? Many parks ban barbecues, and catering needs the landowner’s permission, typically the council’s. After a christening at a church such as St Peter & St Paul, a barbecue at home or a hall nearby is an easy way to feed everyone. With the coast within about 2 miles of St Helen's, wind is the thing to plan for: we choose a sheltered spot for the grill and keep smoke away from guests.

This part of East Sussex takes in TN34 and TN37, so your event can be anywhere in it. Streets in the area include Park Avenue, Keppel Road and Down's Road, and an event on any of them works with a garden, drive or yard for the barbecue. Nearby, we also cater events in Blacklands (1 mile south), Hastings (1 mile south-west), Silverhill (1 mile south-west), Belmont (1 mile south-east) and Hollington (1 mile west). Further out, we also cater in Eastbourne (14 miles south-west), Bexhill-on-Sea (5 miles west), Hailsham (14 miles west), Polegate (15 miles west), Old Town (15 miles south-west) and Heathfield (15 miles north-west).

Nearby you will also find Priory Meadow Shopping Centre (1.2 miles south) and Hastings Old Town Hall Museum (1.3 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Church Wood and Robsack Wood and Senlac Hill.

  • Nearby schools include William Parker Sports College (under half a mile west) and University School (1.3 miles south)
  • Pubs nearby include The Duke pub (0.9 miles west)

Your questions about a catered barbecue in St Helen's

Can you barbecue near the sea around St Helen's?

Yes. We cook under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Is St Helen's close to London?

About 52 miles from central London, and well within our area.

Is there anything for vegans?

We do. Vegetarians get halloumi and vegetable skewers, and vegans get a vegan burger or sausage.

Is barbecued chicken safe?

That is one of the best reasons to have it catered: separate equipment for raw and cooked food, and everything cooked through.

Will you clear up afterwards?

We tidy the serving area. China is available on request.

Is crockery included?

Plates are included. China is available at an extra cost.

What can we have at a catered barbecue?

Burgers, sausages, chicken skewers, ribs, pulled pork and brisket, plus vegetarian and vegan options. Add salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Is the food cooked at the event?

Yes, on site, outdoors and under cover, with our staff serving and clearing.

For event organisers in St Helen's

Planning the cooking spot

Most gardens, car parks, yards and fields work with a little planning. Here’s what helps:

  • A gazebo, marquee or room indoors as a back-up
  • Somewhere for us to park close to the cooking spot
  • A clear way in from where we park

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

What happens on the day

Most barbecue food is cooked through service, so we arrive ahead of food time and cook to demand. It means food comes off the grill hot. A summer barbecue in St Helen's stays light until about 9:15pm at midsummer, which gives a barbecue a long summer evening. By late September, sunset is nearer 7:00pm.

  1. First, you send us your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. On the day, we set up on the agreed spot and get the grill hot.
  4. Our chef cooks and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. We pack everything away when everyone has eaten.

Getting ready for the day

  • Gather dietary requirements early
  • Think about lights for the serving area after dark
  • Think about where the smoke will drift

How we price a catered barbecue

Every booking is priced individually, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Crockery choices
  • Season and day of the week
  • Site access
  • Travel to St Helen's

Midweek and quieter months are often easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Ask us and we will suggest the best fit for your budget.

Getting an accurate quote

These are the details we need:

  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Rough numbers
  • The venue or postcode
  • Dietary requirements

A quote from us sets out the menu, timings, staffing and what’s included, so you can compare caterers fairly. Use our quote form.

Allergies and dietary needs

You’ll get allergen information for everything we serve. To help:

  • Keep the meat-free options clearly labelled
  • Mention any guests who avoid beef
  • Give us numbers for the meat-free options
  • Ask about allergens in glazes and sauces

Slow-cooked meats such as pulled pork and brisket are ready to serve from the start, so nobody waits for the first burgers.

Ask for gluten-free rolls if needed.
