Allergies and dietary needs

Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Ask the production office for dietary needs
  • Plan separately for halal if needed
  • Request gluten-free rolls
  • Share the allergen list with the crew

We get to base first thing, roasting through the morning.

Lamb or chicken gives the crew a choice.

Crew numbers can be large, and carving serves a crowd fast. Add sides for a full meal. We serve salads, a vegan option and new potatoes, and we are regularly asked to cater farm and estate locations and period locations.

Your questions about a hog roast for the crew in Fritwell

What’s the nearest station to Fritwell?

Heyford station, about 4 miles south-west of the centre.

Do you come out to small places like Fritwell?

No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

What do you need from us on the day?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We’ll bring the rest.

What’s included?

Pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling in a soft roll. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

What if it rains?

Rain does not stop the cooking. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Do you need much space at base?

Usually, if there is a level, open spot for the roaster under cover. Locations will confirm the spot.

What if things run late?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

Do you serve the food?

You don’t need anyone else: we carve, serve and tidy up.

How it works

A hog roast is always cooked outside, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We agree exactly where before the day. On a winter shoot near Fritwell, the light goes by about 3:55pm, so the unit base needs lighting for late service. In summer, light lasts until about 9:30pm.

  1. The production office sends us the location, dates, numbers and lunch time.
  2. We check the route and send a price.
  3. Our position and arrival are agreed in advance.
  4. We carve to order the moment lunch is called.
  5. Afterwards we clear our spot at base.

Preparing for the day

  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Send final numbers in good time
