What the cooking area needs

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:

  • A firm way on and off the field
  • A safe distance from other traders
  • Flat, firm ground for the roaster

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Tell us what the event asks of traders
  • Put the menu and allergen information on display
  • Signpost the stall clearly
  • Halal isn’t offered

We arrive early, set up on the pitch and start roasting, timed for the gates opening.

Chicken widens the choice.

Working with your venue

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Check early, and pass on anything they need from us.

If you are a venue or event planner, we’re happy to work alongside your team.

Angmering events: pitches and permissions

Angmering is about 4 miles west of Worthing, in West Sussex. We cover Angmering and its neighbours for events. We cater all 371 towns and villages in West Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Brighton, about 15 miles away.

School fairs, for a school like St Wilfrids Catholic Primary School, are a natural fit for a hog roast. Events in parks such as Clapham Wood need permission from the council or landowner for cooking and vehicles. Events in and around the South Downs National Park, within about 7 miles of Angmering, frequently have rules about cooking, vehicles and waste; we work to the site rules. The coast is within about 4 miles of Angmering, so for seaside events we plan a sheltered pitch.

Events anywhere in BN16 start with an outdoor spot for the roaster. From High Street, Church Road and Station Road or a nearby road, we can set up and roast there. We also bring hog roasts to events in Hammerpot (1 mile north), Hangleton (1 mile south-east), East Preston (1 mile south), West Preston (1 mile south-west) and Angmering-on-Sea (2 miles south). Prices and what affects them

We work out each quote from:

  • Numbers
  • Crockery choices
  • Travel to Angmering
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays

Midweek and quieter months are often easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Ask us and we’ll suggest the best fit for your budget.

What we need to know

To check availability and the cooking area, we’ll need:

  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture
  • Roughly how many people
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china
  • The date and time of the event

Numbers not final yet? Give us your best estimate and we’ll quote on that, and you can confirm nearer the time. Fill in our quote form.

Your questions about a hog roast for your event in Angmering

Which station is closest to Angmering?

The closest is Angmering station, roughly 0.8 miles away.

Is Angmering close to London?

About 49 miles from central London.

Can you sell directly to visitors?

It depends on how your event works. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll discuss the options.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

Do you bring plates?

Plates come as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

How big a hog will we need?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we’ll confirm everything in writing.

What do you need from us on the day?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. We don’t provide halal meat.

How the day works

The secret is time: the meat cooks gently until it is tender while the skin crisps into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. In late May, sunset in Angmering is about 8:50pm, while at midsummer it’s about 9:20pm. After dark, the stall needs lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. We check access to the pitch and send a price.
  3. We set up early so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.
  4. We serve to order through the event.
  5. We pack down, take our waste and leave the pitch clean.

Getting ready for the day

  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage
  • Have a level outdoor spot ready
  • Give us final numbers a week or so before

Planning help

A hog roast or other catering?

For big events, ask us about the expected crowds early. Adding lamb, chicken, extra sides or china changes the price, so each one is itemised. A simple menu keeps the cost down.

Why Angmering hosts choose us

  • Fresh carving at the serving station
  • Salads, potatoes and coleslaw to go with it
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated

Read our prices page or our hog roast cost guide.

Should I cook it myself?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone ends up cooking in batches all afternoon. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

  • Roasted slowly at your venue, outdoors and under cover
  • Freshly carved pork with crackling, stuffing and apple sauce
  • Vegetarian and vegan choices, plus lamb or chicken if you like
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
