Allergies and dietary needs

A hog roast is pork, so plan for anyone who does not eat it. Here’s how to cover everyone:

  • Check other traders are not all selling pork
  • Remember stuffing typically contains gluten
  • Let us know if many visitors are vegetarian
  • Plan separately for halal if needed

At the end, we pack down and take our waste.

About our hog roast for events in Strand-on-the-Green

For a school fair, you want food families will queue for. Pork rolls, chicken and a vegan option cover most visitors. Typical bookings include festivals and horse and dog shows, serving rotisserie chicken, crackling and halloumi skewers.

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

Planning the cooking spot

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:

  • Space for people to queue
  • The landowner’s or council’s agreement
  • Space away from marquees, stalls and trees

Strand-on-the-Green is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

What we serve, dish by dish

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Our vegetarian option is halloumi and vegetable skewers: grilled halloumi with vegetables, in a roll or on a plate.

Roast pork

Everything starts with the slow-roasted pork: carved thick or thin, as people like it, and served hot.

How it works

Service is quick once we start carving: the chef carves and the team serves, with the sides served alongside. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Late-September events in Strand-on-the-Green lose the light at about 7:05pm, so plan lighting if you’re trading into the evening.

  1. You tell us the event, the pitch and the expected crowd.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We carve rolls to order as the queue moves.
  5. We pack up and leave the pitch tidy.

Preparing for the day

  • Collect dietary needs and allergies in advance
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot

What a hog roast costs

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Time on site
  • How many people are eating
  • Menu choices and extras
  • Distance from us

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

What we need to know

To get the best quote, send us:

  • Your menu choices
  • Anything the venue has asked for
  • Allergies we should know about
  • What the outdoor space is like

Busy weekends book up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Tell us your date and we will check it: use our quote form.

Your questions about a hog roast for your event in Strand-on-the-Green

Can you do a hog roast in Kew Green?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first.

Can you get a hog roast into a London garden in Strand-on-the-Green?

It depends on access: a rear gate or yard normally works. Tell us about steps, gates and parking and we’ll advise.

What will our event need from you?

Send us your trader requirements, and we will tell you what we can send.

We do. Tell us the venue or postcode and we will confirm availability.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

Outside, always. The food can be carried in and served indoors where the venue allows.

What about visitors who do not eat pork?

The menu has lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options. Halal meat is not something we offer.

Can visitors buy their own food?

Both models are possible. We will agree what suits yours.
