How to compare hog roast caterers

How our hog roast for events works in Winchelsea

Sports clubs, fun runs and tournaments suit a hog roast, served as people finish. Typical bookings include small festivals and community events, serving apple sauce, a vegan burger or sausage and hog roast rolls.

A fête near Winchelsea might be on a field with no mains power; the roaster runs on gas, so that’s fine. You will know what’s included before you book: the date, the serving time, the menu and the plates, with no surprises on the day.

How we price a hog roast for your event

The biggest factors are:

  • Access to the cooking area
  • Numbers
  • Travel to Winchelsea
  • Whether you want china

The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and how easy the site is. There’s no one-size price, which is why each one gets its own quote.

Getting an accurate quote

The more we know, the more accurate the quote. Useful details:

  • An estimate of numbers
  • The address or postcode
  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Where the roaster could go, ideally with a picture

Planning ahead? Popular dates fill up early, so ask early for summer Saturdays and December. Tell us your date and we’ll check it: fill in our quote form.

Winchelsea: your questions answered

Can you roast near the sea around Winchelsea?

Yes. We roast under cover and choose a sheltered spot where we can.

Which station is closest to Winchelsea?

The closest is Winchelsea station, roughly 0.7 miles away.

What space does the roaster need?

Enough level ground outdoors for the roaster and a serving table under cover, plus a step-free route to wheel the equipment in. Send us a photo if you are unsure.

Do you cover Winchelsea?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, Winchelsea and the rest of East Sussex included. Send us the address for a quote.

How do we prepare?

Only the space and a contact number. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Is mains power needed?

Cooking is gas-fired, so no mains power is needed for the roast. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

How soon do you get booked up?

Popular dates go early. But do ask even at short notice: send us your details through our quote form.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

DIY machine hire is available. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

Planning the cooking spot

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. The ideal spot has:

  • Your trader requirements
  • Clearance from other stalls and tents
  • A queuing area

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

What we serve

  • Stuffing and apple sauce
  • Coleslaw
  • Vegan burger or sausage (Ve)
  • Crackling
  • Rotisserie chicken
  • Hog roast rolls
  • Halloumi skewers (V)

Fairs, fêtes and events in Winchelsea

Winchelsea is about 7 miles north-east of Hastings, in East Sussex. Events in Winchelsea are part of our patch, as well as the surrounding area. We cover all 289 towns and villages across East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Canterbury, about 29 miles away.

If visitors are coming by train, Winchelsea station, about 0.7 miles north-west, is the nearest station. If your event is in Rye Harbour LNR, the organiser will need the landowner’s permission for hot-food traders and vehicles. The coast is within about 3 miles of Winchelsea, so for seaside events we plan a sheltered pitch.

We cover events in every part of TN36 and the streets around it. Whether your event is on High Street, Barrack Square and Station Road or anywhere nearby, we’ll bring the roaster to you. Planning for dietary needs

You’ll get allergen information for everything we serve. To make the most of it:

  • Balance the food line-up
  • Share the event’s food safety requirements with us
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if you expect coeliac visitors

We get to the pitch early, so the roast is ready when visitors arrive.

Chicken widens the choice.

Full catering or machine hire?

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

A hog roast compared with other options

One hog roast and a couple of other stalls makes a good food line-up. Numbers make the biggest difference: bigger groups normally cost less per head, since much of the cost is fixed.

Why Winchelsea hosts choose us

  • Served at the time you choose
  • Lamb, chicken and vegetarian options alongside
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • No surprises: everything in writing

Organising for someone else?

Marquee hire companies frequently have rules about cooking near their tents, so let them know about the roaster. We’ll keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

What happens on the day

Slow roasting is the whole point: hours of gentle heat make the pork soft and juicy while the skin turns into crackling. It rests for a short while before carving. Summer events in Winchelsea have daylight until about 9:15pm at midsummer and about 7:00pm by late September, so evening trading normally finishes in daylight in high summer. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, the pitch needs lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the date, site, numbers and how food will be paid for.
  2. You get a check on the date and pitch, and a quote.
  3. On the day we set up under cover and get the hog on.
  4. We carve rolls to order as the queue moves.
  5. Afterwards we clear the pitch and go.
