How our hog roast hire works in Aldgate

We roast the hog at your event, not in a kitchen miles away, so the pork is hot and the crackling is crisp when it is served. Add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options if you like. Whether it’s festive gatherings and wedding breakfasts and evening food, we’ll put together a menu of coleslaw, rotisserie chicken and hog roast rolls for your guests.

London gardens around Aldgate are frequently small and close to neighbours, so we look for a spot well away from fences, sheds and windows. Warn the neighbours: the roast cooks for hours. We bring the people to serve and clear up, so you are not left handing out rolls or tidying up afterwards.

What the cooking area needs

Most outdoor spaces can work with a little planning. Here’s what we look for:

  • A level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Any venue rules sorted in advance
  • A safe distance from walls, tents and trees

As a London location, Aldgate is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access takes planning: tell us about side or rear access, steps and parking for our vehicle.

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and the way in, and we’ll say what we think.

Crackling

Good crackling needs time and heat, which is exactly what a slow hog roast gives it.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Choose from salads, new potatoes, coleslaw and roast or jacket potatoes, to suit your event.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a barbecue, one roast feeds everyone at once, so nobody stands at a grill all afternoon. See our guide to hog roast or barbecue. What you pay covers the meat, the chef and staff, and hours of roasting. A long, slow roast means an early start, and the quote reflects that.

What you get with us

Looking after everyone

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans for the halloumi skewers and vegan option
  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Ask about allergies when you send invitations

Expect us to be on site for much of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

Add lamb or chicken for a second roast.

Hog roast hire around Aldgate

Aldgate is about 1 mile north-east of London, in Greater London. Events in Aldgate are part of our patch. Aldgate is one of 764 places in Greater London we cover.

If you had Finsbury Circus in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we can’t simply set up a roaster in a public park. Churches such as St James Duke's Place rarely have room for a roaster, but a hall or home close by typically does.

Anywhere in E1, EC2A and SE1, we can bring the roaster to you. That could mean an event in a garden on Bush Lane, Swan Lane and Mark Lane, wherever there is an outdoor spot for the roaster. Aldgate is on the A3 and A10, so it is easy for us to reach with the equipment. We also bring hog roasts to events in Spitalfields (1 mile north-east), Bishopsgate (1 mile north-west), Tower Hill (1 mile south), Whitechapel (1 mile north-east) and City of London (1 mile west). We also serve nearby towns such as City of Westminster (3 miles west), Marylebone (3 miles west), Kensington (5 miles west), Walthamstow (6 miles north-east), Hampstead (5 miles north-west) and Ruislip (15 miles west).

A little further out are Minories (under half a mile south-east) and Tower of London (under half a mile south). Open spaces near Aldgate include St. James's Park Lake and Lavender Pond.

  • Schools near Aldgate include Fund Academy (within half a mile east) and London Enterprise Academy (0.6 miles east)
  • Pubs nearby include East India Arms (under half a mile south-west)
  • Other local spots include Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives (under half a mile north)

Should I cook it myself?

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Aldgate: your questions answered

What if our house in Aldgate has no side access?

It depends on access: a rear gate or yard generally works. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Could you cook in Finsbury Circus?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council, and many parks do not allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

Is hog roast hire catered or DIY?

You can have us cook, or hire the machine. Your quote will set out what’s included.

Do you cover Aldgate?

We do. Tell us the venue or postcode and we’ll check the date.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

We can add lamb or chicken, plus halloumi skewers for vegetarians and a vegan burger or sausage. Halal meat is not something we offer.

Is crackling included?

It is: slow roasting crisps the skin and we break it up for everyone.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We pack everything away after service, so you are not left with the mess.

What about coeliacs?

Ask for gluten-free rolls and we will bring them. We will give you full allergen information for every dish.

The process

A hog roast is always cooked outside, on a level, open spot under cover, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We agree exactly where before the day. Because the roast takes hours, daylight is worth planning: around Aldgate, it stays light until about 9:20pm at midsummer, but by late December it is dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check availability and the space for the roaster and send a clear quote.
  3. On the day we arrive hours before serving and start the roast under cover.
  4. At serving time, the chef carves and the team serves.
  5. Afterwards we clear up and leave the spot tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Send final numbers in good time
