A hog roast near Charlton

Charlton: venues, access and local tips

Charlton is about 2 miles west of Plumstead, in Greater London. Planning a hog roast in Charlton? We cover the whole area. We cater all 764 towns and villages in Greater London. Our bookings stretch from Charlton to London (about 6 miles away).

Nearby historic houses include Queen's House (1.9 miles west) and Eltham Palace (2.8 miles south). Historic venues often limit cooking on site, so ask early if you’re booking one. A green space like Charlton Park is tempting, but a gas-fired roaster there needs the landowner’s say-so, typically the council’s.

Anywhere in SE7 and SE18, we can roast on site for your guests. That could mean an event in a garden on Floyd Road, Guild Road and Priolo Road or the roads around them, wherever there is an outdoor spot for the roaster. We also bring hog roasts to events in New Charlton (1 mile north-west), Westcombe Park (1 mile west), Woolwich (1 mile east), Vanbrugh Park Estate (1 mile south-west) and Kidbrooke (2 miles south). We also serve nearby towns such as London (6 miles west), City of Westminster (8 miles west), Marylebone (8 miles west), Kensington (10 miles west), St Pancras (7 miles west) and Shoreditch (6 miles north-west).

A little further out are British Hospital for Mothers and Babies (0.5 miles east) and Gallions Reach Shopping Park (2.3 miles north-east). The countryside around Charlton includes Gilbert's Pit.

  • Nearby schools include Royal Greenwich Trust School (under half a mile north) and Wildwood Montessori School (1.3 miles south-west)
  • Local pubs include The Victoria pub (less than half a mile north)

How our hog roast hire works in Charlton

In Charlton, a hog roast is an easy way to feed plenty of people: one roast, slow-cooked for hours, carved in front of everyone. We bring the roaster, the cover and the serving kit, and we serve and tidy up afterwards. We serve new potatoes, crackling and spit-roast lamb, and typical bookings are for birthdays and anniversaries and wakes and memorial gatherings.

Gardens in Charlton tend to be compact, with neighbours on both sides, so we look for a spot well away from fences, sheds and windows. A word with the neighbours before a long roast is always a good idea. Timings are planned around your event, because the roast has to start hours before you eat, so the food is ready at the right moment.

The menu, dish by dish

Roast pork

Our chef carves the pork as it is needed, which keeps it hot and moist.

Stuffing and apple sauce

Sharp, sweet apple sauce and savoury sage and onion stuffing go with the pork perfectly. Note that stuffing normally contains gluten.

Should I cook it myself?

You could go for a cold buffet, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience, especially outdoors.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You cook and carve it yourself; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

Allergies and dietary needs

Rolls and stuffing usually contain gluten, and gluten-free rolls are available on request. Other tips:

  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
  • Count anyone who doesn’t eat pork, and order an alternative for them

Name someone to meet us, who can show us the cooking spot and pass on any changes.

How to compare hog roast caterers

Planners, venues and businesses

If you are organising for someone else, such as a wedding planner, an office manager or a fête committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We’ll keep everyone in the loop.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it is worth asking first. We’ll work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

A hog roast or other catering?

A hog roast has one downside: it’s pork. That’s why we offer lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers and a vegan option. Published UK guides give a wide range for hog roast catering, from around £10 a head for a basic roll to £20 or more with sides and service. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

Why us?

  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Timed around your day
  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • Self-contained: roaster, cover and serving kit

How the day works

A hog roast is always cooked outside, under a gazebo on level ground, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. In Charlton, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, so a summer evening hog roast is normally carved in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get an availability check and a clear quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. We roast slowly on site, then carve for your guests.
  5. We serve, tidy up and leave the spot clean.
