Hog roast hire in Downside, slow-roasted on site

Hiring a hog roast means a whole hog cooked slowly on site, over several hours, outdoors under cover. When it’s ready, our chef carves it and our staff serve it in soft rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and a piece of crackling. We’re frequently asked to cater wakes and weddings, day or evening, serving crackling, salads and rotisserie chicken.

In a small place like Downside, a hog roast frequently goes in a field, a farmyard or a big garden. Country lanes and long drives are fine if we know about them, and level, firm ground is the key. Our staff serve and clear, so nobody in your party has to serve or tidying up afterwards.

Organising for someone else?

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it’s worth asking first. We’ll liaise with them on access and set-up.

Marquee hire companies often have rules about cooking near their tents, so tell them a hog roast is coming. We’ll keep the roaster well clear of the marquee.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

The hardest part of a DIY hog roast is timing: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you.

Questions from Downside

We are gathering after a service at St Michael's Chapel: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is usually served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

What’s the nearest station to Downside?

Cobham & Stoke Dabernon station, about 1 mile north-east of the centre.

Do you come to Downside?

Yes, Downside is in our area. Send us the address and we’ll check the date.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

Pork is the classic, and you can add spit-roast lamb or rotisserie chicken. Vegetarian and vegan options are available too.

Do we need a big space?

Access and clearance matter more than size. Tell us about the garden and we’ll advise.

Do you serve the food?

No need for your own staff: our chef carves and our team serves and clears.

How do we prepare?

Only the space and a contact number. We bring the roaster, cover and serving kit.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We pack everything away after service, and we take our equipment with us.

Looking after everyone

Tell us about dietary needs early and we will help. Some ideas:

  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations
  • Ask us to keep the vegetarian food separate and labelled
  • Remember that stuffing typically contains gluten, so ask for the allergen list

Name someone to meet us, ideally not the host, so you can enjoy yourself.

A second roast, lamb or chicken, gives people a choice, priced in the quote.

How it works

Service is quick once we start carving: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Planning an evening hog roast in Downside? Sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:05pm in late September; once it’s dark, we need light at the carving station.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We get the roaster going hours before you eat.
  4. Our chef carves and our staff serve.
  5. We clear up and go.

How to prepare

A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with a plated meal, a hog roast needs no kitchen and fewer staff, which frequently makes it better value. Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, which is built into the price.
