Common questions in Mapledurwell

Do you come out to small places like Mapledurwell?

No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

We are gathering after a service at Church of St. Mary: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is typically served at the reception venue rather than the church. Tell us where you’ll gather.

Is mains power needed?

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Tell us what’s available and we will plan around it.

What do you need from us on the day?

The agreed cooking area, access for our equipment and someone to meet us. We bring everything else.

When do you start roasting?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, so we arrive well before you want to eat. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

Do you cover the whole of Hampshire?

All of Hampshire is in our area. Tell us the venue and we will quote.

What’s included?

Pork, stuffing, apple sauce and crackling in a soft roll. Your quote lists any sides and extras.

Will there be enough to go round?

We plan quantities from the numbers you give us, and we’ll talk it through when we quote.

How the day works

On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. Around midsummer it stays light in Mapledurwell until about 9:25pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:10pm, so summer evening service is usually in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 4:00pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. You tell us the date, the address, rough numbers and when you’d like to eat.
  2. We check availability and the space for the roaster and send a clear quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. Our chef carves to order and our staff serve at the agreed time.
  5. We pack everything away when everyone has eaten.

How to prepare

Planning help

Why choose a hog roast in Mapledurwell?

Compared with a cold buffet, hot roast pork carved in front of you is a different experience. A buffet can sit out all afternoon. Compare like for like: the menu, sides, service time, staffing, crockery and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Why book our hog roast in Mapledurwell

  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • Planned to your running order
  • We bring everything to cook and serve
  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to

Take a look at our prices page or the cost guide.

Allergies and dietary needs

Not everyone eats pork, so it is worth adding an alternative. A few pointers:

  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Tell guests what’s on the menu in advance
  • Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

We will be with you for a good part of the day, because the roast starts hours before you eat.

A second roast, lamb or chicken, gives people a choice.

Space, access and the venue

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, so a few things are worth checking:

  • Cover for your guests in bad weather
  • A safe distance from walls, tents and trees
  • Access for our equipment, without steps

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you are organising for someone else, whether you’re a planner, a PA or on a committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We will keep you both updated.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so it is worth asking first. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

What comes off the roaster

Spit-roast lamb

Adding lamb gives people a choice of two roasts, which works well for larger groups.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Salads, new potatoes, coleslaw and roast or jacket potatoes turn rolls into a full meal.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is normally easier.

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we will confirm what comes with it when you ask.
