Planning an event in Maryland?

For event organisers in Maryland

Marquee suppliers normally set distances for cooking equipment, so let them know about the roaster. The roaster stays a safe distance from the marquee.

If you are organising for someone else, whether you are a planner, a PA or on a committee, let us know who we’ll deal with on the day. We will keep you both updated.

About our hog roast hire in Maryland

There is nothing quite like the smell of a hog roast drifting across a garden or field. We roast slowly on site in Maryland, then carve the pork into rolls with all the trimmings. Whether it is milestone birthdays and gatherings after a funeral, we’ll put together a menu of crackling, rotisserie chicken and hog roast rolls for your guests.

In a London neighbourhood like Maryland, the big question is getting the roaster to the cooking spot. Many terraced houses have no side access, so tell us whether there is a rear gate, a front garden or a yard we can use, and a picture helps us check. Timings are planned around your event, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Questions from Maryland

What’s the nearest station to Maryland?

Maryland has its own station: Stratford (London) station.

We’re gathering after a service at Church of St John the Evangelist: can you cater?

Yes, at a nearby hall, home or venue with room to cook outside. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Is our garden big enough?

Access and clearance matter more than size. Describe the space and we will tell you honestly.

Is crackling included?

Of course: the skin turns to crackling and everyone gets some.

Do you serve the food?

You do not need anyone else: our chef carves and our team serves and clears.

Can we hire the machine and cook it ourselves?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

How long does a hog roast take to cook?

Several hours, depending on the size and the weather, which is why we arrive hours ahead. We plan the timings from when you want to eat.

What space does the roaster need?

A flat, open spot outside, and a way to wheel everything in. A picture helps.

What the cooking area needs

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. The ideal spot has:

  • Parking near the spot
  • Flat outdoor ground for the roaster and a gazebo
  • Access for our equipment, without steps

Maryland is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

Not sure about the cooking spot? Send us a picture and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a plated meal, a hog roast needs no kitchen and fewer staff, which usually keeps the cost down. For larger numbers, a hog roast is normally good value, because one whole roast feeds plenty of people. The menu, extras such as china and the serving time all affect the final price.

Why us?

  • Carved to order by a chef
  • Served at the time you choose
  • Halloumi skewers and a vegan option too
  • No surprises: everything in writing

See our prices page or what a hog roast costs.

Catered or do it yourself?

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but nothing beats hot pork and crackling carved in front of you, especially outdoors.

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

About the food

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Everything goes into a soft roll, perfect for eating on the move. Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

Halloumi and vegetable skewers (V)

Not everyone eats meat, and halloumi skewers give them a proper hot option.

Planning for dietary needs

Allergies and dietary needs are easy to manage if we know in advance. Some ideas:

  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly
  • Remember that stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • If anyone needs halal food, plan a separate option
  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages

If timings shift, tell us: we can hold the roast for a while.

We also hire out the roaster for DIY hog roasts.

How the day works

Serving is straightforward: our chef carves and our staff fill the rolls or plates, and sides go out at the same time. Afterwards we clear the serving area and pack away. Around midsummer it stays light in Maryland until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening service is generally in daylight. For winter events, dark by about 3:55pm, we need light by the roaster and the serving table.

  1. It starts with your date, venue, numbers and serving time.
  2. You get a check on the date and the spot, and a quote.
  3. We arrive well ahead, put the cover up and get the hog roasting.
  4. We carve and serve when you’re ready to eat.
  5. We pack everything away when everyone has eaten.

Getting ready for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
