How to compare hog roast caterers

What affects the price in Temple Mills

The biggest factors are:

  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • Travel to Temple Mills
  • Whether you want china
  • Numbers

Compare like for like: menu, sides, serving time, staff, plates and travel. The cheapest quote is not always the best value.

Getting an accurate quote

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • The date and when you’d like to eat
  • A picture of the cooking area
  • Any dietary needs or allergies
  • Your menu choices

It is easy to get a price: tell us when, where, how many and what time you’d like to eat. You will get a clear quote listing what’s included. Use our quote form.

Looking after everyone

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. Other tips:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Count anyone who does not eat pork, so we can bring lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Tell us about vegetarians and vegans so we bring enough halloumi skewers and vegan burgers or sausages
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly

Let us know if the day runs late: a cooked roast can be held for a while before carving.

Sides turn a roll into a proper meal, and they’re listed in your quote.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to a formal plated meal, a hog roast doesn’t need a kitchen, which usually keeps the cost down. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

Why book with us

  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • Timed around your day
  • Cooked on the day, low and slow
  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling

Step by step

We get there well ahead of service, since slow roasting cannot be rushed. Your guests will smell it long before they see it. Light matters for a long roast: around Temple Mills, it stays light until about 9:20pm at midsummer, but by late December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so winter bookings need lighting from mid-afternoon.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. We check the date and the cooking spot, then send a quote.
  3. Timings and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. On the day we roast for hours, then carve to order.
  5. We serve, tidy up and leave the spot clean.

Getting ready for the day

  • Give us final numbers a week or so before
  • Plan somewhere sheltered for people to eat if it rains
  • Check there is nothing overhead or close by that could catch the heat

Should I cook it myself?

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a whole hog takes hours, and it needs to be cooked through safely. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

What the cooking area needs

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Look for:

  • Somewhere nearby to park our vehicle
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • The venue’s agreement to a gas-fired roaster

Temple Mills is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.
