Questions from Southwark

Can you cater after a service at Borough Welsh Congregational Chapel?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Tell us where you will gather.

Could you cook in Little Dorrit's Playground?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council, and many parks don’t allow cooking. Ask them first, and tell us what they say.

What happens in bad weather?

We roast under cover, so the food is not affected. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

Do you serve the food?

Our chef carves and our staff serve, then clear the serving area afterwards.

Do we need a big space?

Often, yes, if there’s a level, open spot away from the house and trees, as long as we can get the equipment in. A photo helps us check.

How much does a hog roast cost?

It depends on numbers, the menu and how long we are on site. Send us the details and we’ll quote.

Do you bring plates?

We bring plates as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

Add lamb or rotisserie chicken alongside the pork. There are vegetarian and vegan options as well.

A hog roast compared with other options

The obvious catch is that a hog roast is pork. That is why we offer lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers and a vegan option for anyone who does not eat it. Numbers make the biggest difference: bigger groups typically cost less per head, since much of the cost is fixed.

Why book with us

  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Our staff serve and clear
  • No surprises: everything in writing
  • Roasted on site, slowly, for hours

Take a look at our prices page or the cost guide.

Diets, allergies and alternatives

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Stuffing normally contains gluten, so check the allergen information
  • Find out who does not eat pork, and order an alternative for them
  • We do not offer halal meat, so arrange that separately if it is needed
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them

Let us know if the day runs late: we can hold the roast for a while.

Gluten-free rolls are available on request.

The menu, dish by dish

Rolls and gluten-free rolls

Rolls or plates? Rolls are quicker; plates suit a sit-down meal, with gluten-free rolls on request.

Crackling

The skin crisps up over the hours of roasting, and we break it up so everyone gets a piece.

Planning a hog roast in Southwark

Nearby historic houses include Mansion House (0.9 miles north) and Dr Johnson's House (1.1 miles north-west). If your event is at a historic house or estate, check its rules on outside caterers and gas cooking early. If you had Little Dorrit's Playground in mind, ask the council or landowner first: we cannot simply set up a roaster in a public park.

Wherever your event is in SE1 and SE11, we can bring the roaster to you, from busy streets to quiet lanes. Whether your event is on Borough Square, Trinity Church Square and Merrick Square or a nearby road, we can set up and roast there. You will find Southwark on the A300 and B240, which makes the journey straightforward. Should I cook it myself?

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For weddings and bigger events, a catered roast is normally easier.

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

The process

The roaster is gas-fired, so we don’t need mains power to cook, though a socket nearby is handy for lighting. By late September, sunset in Southwark is around 7:05pm, and in December it is nearer 3:55pm. After dark, a lit path to the food makes a difference.

  1. You share the when, where and how many.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees

Organising for someone else?

Venues often have rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Check early, and tell us what they ask for.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before you book. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

Before you choose a spot

Planning the cooking spot is the key. Check these:

  • Flat outdoor ground for the roaster and a gazebo
  • Access for our equipment, without steps
  • Space away from buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

Southwark is in London, within the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and access can be tight: let us know how we reach the cooking spot and where we can park.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before you book.
