Planning an event in The Haven?

Looking after everyone

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Request gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Put the menu on the invitation
  • Collect allergies with your RSVPs
  • Label the vegetarian and vegan food clearly

You will not need to worry about the food on the day. We get there early, cook, carve and serve, and our staff clear the serving area afterwards.

Ask for gluten-free rolls for anyone who needs them.

How our hog roast hire works in The Haven

Hog roast hire takes the cooking off your hands. We get there early, put up the cover and roast for hours, ready to carve when you are. We are frequently asked to cater community events and sports clubs and societies, with hog roast rolls, salads and rotisserie chicken.

In a hamlet or village like The Haven, a farmyard or a neighbour’s field can make a good cooking spot. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. Everything is cooked on the day, at your venue, low and slow, for hours, then carved fresh for your guests.

The process

We cook on a gas-fired roaster, so cooking does not depend on mains power. Evenings in The Haven stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; after dark, the serving area and the path to it need good lighting.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and address.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We arrive early, set up under cover and start roasting.
  4. The chef carves and the team fills rolls or plates.
  5. We clear up and go.

Getting ready for the day

  • Tell us about narrow gates or side passages

FAQs for The Haven

Which station is closest to The Haven?

Billingshurst station, about 3.4 miles south of the centre.

Do you come out to small places like The Haven?

No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Can we just hire the roaster?

Yes, we hire out the hog roast machine. We’ll confirm what comes with it and how to use it.

What’s included?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Do we need a big space?

It depends on the space and access more than size. Describe the space and we will tell you honestly.

What happens after service?

We clear the serving area and pack away, and leave the area tidy.

Can we have lamb or chicken?

Pork is the classic, and you can add spit-roast lamb or rotisserie chicken. Vegetarian and vegan options are available too.

Will people get crackling?

Of course: slow roasting crisps the skin and we break it up for everyone.

The menu, dish by dish

Rotisserie chicken

Golden rotisserie chicken goes into rolls or onto plates alongside the pork.

Salads, potatoes and coleslaw

Add salads, coleslaw and potatoes to make it a proper meal.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

Catered or DIY? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With DIY hire, you do the work and save on staffing.

DIY hire works best when someone in the family loves cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

What a hog roast costs

Your quote depends on:

  • The number of people
  • The journey to the venue
  • Plates or china
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays

Numbers make the biggest difference: the price per head usually falls as numbers rise, because the roaster, staff and travel cost much the same either way.

What to tell us

When you contact us, please mention:

  • What the outdoor space is like
  • The date and time of the event
  • Roughly how many people
  • Allergies we should know about

Numbers not final yet? Give us your best estimate and we will quote on that, then confirm closer to the date. Send us your details through our quote form.
