If you’re hiring a historic venue for a big birthday, check its rules on outside caterers first. Near the coast, within about 2 miles, gardens can catch the wind, so we plan a sheltered spot.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

If you are confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works when we quote.

Full catering or machine hire? With catering, our chef roasts, carves and serves, and our staff clear up. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

Where the roaster can go in Hollingdean

Before the day, it helps to think about where the roaster will go. We look for:

  • Clearance from walls, fences and overhanging branches
  • A step-free way into the garden
  • A gazebo, marquee or room indoors for guests if it rains

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think.

Why choose party hog roast in Hollingdean?

You are a host, not a cook.

However big or small the event in Hollingdean, a hog roast feeds a crowd well. Bookings often include:

  • Neighbourhood parties
  • 18th, 21st, 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays
  • Getting-engaged parties
  • Reunions

If the day starts at St Richard's, the roast can be ready when everyone gets back.

Questions to ask before booking

  • If the price includes VAT
  • Arrival time and how long the roast needs
  • How they handle allergens and dietary needs
  • Whether plates or china are included

How to compare hog roast caterers

Prices and what affects them

Each booking is quoted on its own, based on a few main things:

  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • The number of people
  • Whether you want china
  • Distance from us

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we’re on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

Details that help

For a quick, accurate price, tell us:

  • Any venue rules
  • Where the event is
  • An estimate of numbers
  • Any dietary needs or allergies

Numbers not final yet? A rough figure is fine for a first quote, then confirm closer to the date. Use our quote form.

A hog roast compared with other options

Next to a barbecue, no one gets stuck at the grill, and the food is ready for everyone at once. Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose makes a difference too. Ask us and we’ll suggest the best fit for your budget.

Why book with us

  • Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • A clear quote with everything listed
  • Staff to serve, so you don’t have to
  • Planned to your running order

Step by step

Slow roasting is the whole point: the meat cooks gently until it’s tender while the skin crisps into crackling. Then it rests briefly before our chef carves. Sunset in Hollingdean is about 8:50pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June, so most summer parties eat in daylight. Winter parties, dark by about 3:55pm, need lights by the roaster.

  1. Send a photo of where the roaster could go.
  2. We check the space and quote.
  3. We cook for hours on site.
  4. We serve when you’re ready.
  5. We clear up so you do not have to.

Getting ready for the day

  • Plan a step-free way in for the equipment
  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches

Questions from Hollingdean

Can you cater after a service at St Richard's?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is usually elsewhere. Tell us where you will gather.

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Can we just hire the roaster?

We do, if you are happy to roast and carve yourself. Ask and we will talk you through it.

What if it rains?

Rain does not stop the cooking. Somewhere covered for people to eat helps.

Will there be enough to go round?

Quantities are based on your numbers, and we’ll confirm everything in writing.

Do you do DIY hire for parties?

You can hire the machine. We’ll explain what’s supplied and how it works.

Do we need our own staff?

Our chef carves and our staff serve, and we clear up when service is finished.

How far ahead should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can frequently be booked at shorter notice. Ask and we’ll check.

Looking after everyone

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, so ask for gluten-free rolls if you need them. A few more tips:

  • Give us numbers for vegetarians and vegans
  • Remember stuffing normally contains gluten
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls if anyone needs them
  • Let us know roughly how many children

If the party runs late, the roast can wait a little, so tell us if timings change.

Ask for gluten-free rolls if needed.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Staff to serve at the agreed time, then clear away
