DIY versus a catered hog roast

Buying in a cold buffet is another option, but hot, freshly carved roast pork is a different experience.

Party hog roast near Speen

Hosting a party means juggling everything at once. A hog roast takes the food off your list: we cook, carve and serve. We serve hog roast rolls, apple sauce and coleslaw, and typical bookings are for street parties and anniversary parties.

Country parties near Speen suit a hog roast: roasted all afternoon and carved on the lawn. Have a covered area for guests in wet weather. We plan the timings around your day, because the roast has to start hours before you eat.

Planning for dietary needs

With a bit of planning, dietary needs are easier to handle. A few tips:

  • Add a dietary question to the invite
  • Let us know roughly how many children
  • Ask us to label vegetarian and vegan food
  • Tell us how many vegetarians and vegans to expect

If the party runs late, the roast can wait a little, so just let us know.

A string of lights by the carving station looks great as it gets dark.

A hog roast or other catering?

Next to ordering takeaway, the roast is an event in itself. Weekday and off-season dates can be easier to book, and the menu you choose matters too. Tell us your budget and we’ll suggest what works.

What you get with us

  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • All the equipment comes with us
  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Planned to your running order

See our prices page or our hog roast cost guide.

How the day works

A typical booking goes like this: we arrive, set up under cover and start roasting, the pork cooks slowly for hours, and our chef carves it when you are ready. Autumn parties in Speen get dark early: about 7:05pm by late September and 3:55pm by December. Plan lights for the path and the food.

  1. Tell us about your party: date, address and numbers.
  2. We check the space and send a price.
  3. We arrive early and get the roast going.
  4. We carve and serve at food time.
  5. We clear the serving area and go.

Before we arrive

  • Send final numbers in good time
  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Ensure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees

Planners, venues and businesses

Event organisers frequently ask caterers for paperwork such as a risk assessment. Tell us what you need and we will tell you what we can send.

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, including where gas cooking is allowed. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

Speen: your questions answered

Is Speen too small for a hog roast?

No, we come to small places too. Let us know about access and the cooking spot.

Is Speen close to London?

About 32 miles from central London.

What about the neighbours?

It’s worth warning them: roasting takes hours. Some hosts invite them over for a roll.

Do you do DIY hog roast hire?

Yes, for confident cooks. Ask and we’ll talk you through it.

What if things run late?

Because the roast takes hours, we plan from your serving time, and a cooked roast can be held for a while if things run late.

Do we need a marquee for a party hog roast?

Not for the cooking, but plan somewhere dry for guests.

What about kids?

Yes, and tell us how many children are coming, so we get the amounts right.

Do we need to wash up?

Yes, we clear up after service, so there is very little washing up.

Space, access and the venue

A good cooking spot makes the day run smoothly. Ideally:

  • Space for our vehicle near the drive
  • Space away from the house, fences, sheds and trees
  • A gazebo, marquee or room indoors for guests if it rains

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.
