Bartley questions

Do you cater at venues in the New Forest National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

We are gathering after a service at Bartley Village Hall: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is normally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Can you cater in Bartley?

Yes. We cover London and the South East, including Bartley and Hampshire. Send us the address for a quote.

Do you provide china?

We bring plates as standard. If you’d like china, ask and we’ll add it to the quote.

What if things run late?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we’ll fit around changes.

How much will it be?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Send us the details and we’ll quote.

What comes with the hog roast?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. Extras include lamb, chicken, halloumi skewers, a vegan option, salads and potatoes.

Is a hog roast OK for a sit-down meal?

It works well as a relaxed main meal, with alternatives for non-pork eaters.

Planning for dietary needs

Standard rolls and stuffing contain gluten, and gluten-free rolls are available on request. A few more tips:

  • Confirm final numbers a week or so before
  • Share the menu with your venue coordinator
  • Pass numbers for vegetarians and vegans to us
  • If any guests need halal food, arrange it separately

For evening food, we carve as the dancing gets going.

What the cooking area needs

The roaster needs the right spot, because it cooks outside for several hours, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • A route to wheel equipment to the spot
  • A level spot near, but not too near, the marquee
  • Power for lights in the evening

If you are unsure, send a photo of the space and the way in, and we will say what we think before you book.

What happens on the day

On the day, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, timed so it’s ready when you want to eat. In Bartley, midsummer sunset is about 9:25pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:10pm, which means an evening hog roast is usually served in daylight in high summer. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 4:00pm.

  1. We start with your date, venue, numbers and running order.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. We agree arrival, cooking spot and serving times with you and your venue.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon, and our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff clear the serving area and we leave quietly.

Before we arrive

  • Have a covered area for eating in case of rain
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Have a level outdoor spot ready

A barbecue is the other obvious choice, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

Crackling

Crackling is what people queue for: golden, crunchy and salty.
