Wedding hog roast near Blacknest

Wedding timings shift, and a slow roast copes well: it can be held for a while once cooked, so a long speech won’t ruin the food. We’re often asked to cater garden weddings at home and second-day get-togethers, serving salads, carved roast pork and crackling.

Rural weddings around Blacknest have a magic of their own, and a whole hog roasting through the afternoon adds to it. Plan firm ground and a route for our vehicle. You will know what’s included before booking: serving times, the menu, staff and anything else agreed.

How it works

When we arrive, we position the roaster under cover and get the hog cooking. From there it cooks low and slow for hours, worked back from your serving time. At a December wedding in Blacknest, it’s dark by about 4:00pm, so the route from the reception to the hog roast needs lighting, while a June wedding has light until about 9:20pm.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon; our chef carves on cue.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Preparing for the day

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Give us a contact number for the day
  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand

Prices and what affects them

A few things make the biggest difference to the price:

  • Menu choices and extras
  • The serving time and how long we are on site
  • The date and time of year
  • The journey to the venue

Most of the cost is the meat, the staff and the time on site. Slow roasting means we are on site for much of the day, and the quote reflects that.

What to tell us

Good details mean a good quote. Useful details:

  • Rules from the venue or landowner
  • Roughly how many people
  • Which meats and sides you’d like
  • Allergies we should know about

Tell us your date, venue or postcode and roughly how many people, plus when you’d like to eat. We’ll confirm availability and send a price. Use our quote form.

Before you choose a spot

It’s worth planning the cooking area in advance. We look for:

  • Light near the carving station after dark
  • Approval from the venue or marquee supplier
  • A route to wheel equipment to the spot

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise.

FAQs for Blacknest

Do you come out to small places like Blacknest?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Tell us about lanes, gates and the ground.

Do you cater at venues in the Surrey Hills National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

Where do you cook at a marquee wedding?

Outside, under its own cover, a safe distance from the marquee. Serving inside is fine where allowed.

Will our venue allow a hog roast?

Many do, but some only allow approved caterers or charge a fee. Ask your venue early, and we’ll work with them on the details.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

There are lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options: spit-roast lamb, rotisserie chicken, halloumi and vegetable skewers or a vegan burger or sausage. We don’t offer halal meat.

Does the roaster have to be outside?

The roaster always stays outside, under cover, away from buildings and marquee walls. We can frequently serve indoors if the venue agrees.

Can you do our evening wedding food?

It is one of our most popular wedding bookings. Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling go down well after dancing.

Do you clear up?

We pack everything away after service, so you’re not left with the mess.

Allergies and dietary needs

Some guests will not eat pork, so plan an alternative. Helpful tips:

  • Halal is not offered, so plan separately if needed
  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Put a dietary question on the invitation
  • Remember that stuffing typically contains gluten

Evening food usually goes out an hour or two after the first dance, timed with you in advance.

Lamb alongside the pork gives guests a choice.

DIY versus a catered hog roast

You could roast a hog yourself, but it is a long day’s work, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If you’d rather not worry about it, let us cook.

  • Slow-roasted on site for hours, outdoors at your event
  • Carved by our chef into rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Options beyond pork, including lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes
  • Our team serves at your chosen time and clears up afterwards
