DIY versus a catered hog roast

Some hosts try a barbecue instead, but someone has to stand at the grill all day. A hog roast cooks in one go and is carved for everyone.

If you’re confident and want to save on staff, DIY machine hire is an option. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

For planners, venues and organisers

Planning on behalf of a committee? A single point of contact keeps things simple, particularly when timings shift.

Many venues set rules for outside caterers, from approved lists to where a gas roaster can go. Ask early, and tell us what they ask for.

A hog roast or other catering?

Compared with a barbecue, one roast feeds all your guests together without batches coming off a grill. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, along with distance and how easy the site is. Every booking is different, which is why each one gets its own quote.

Why us?

  • Serving and clearing done for you
  • Slow-roasted at your venue, not reheated
  • All the equipment comes with us
  • Choices for people who don’t eat pork

How the day works

Your timings come first. If things run late, a cooked roast can be kept hot for a while, so tell us as soon as plans change. In Curteis' Corner, midsummer sunset is about 9:15pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:00pm, so evening food is frequently carved in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:50pm.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We check the venue’s rules and the date, then quote.
  3. We fit timings around your running order.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Preparing for the day

  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Make sure the cooking area is away from walls, tents and trees
  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day

Can you do a hog roast at a venue in the High Weald National Landscape?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules for caterers; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

Can you cater for vegetarians?

It’s one of our most popular wedding bookings. Rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling go down well after dancing.

Can you roast in the rain?

We roast under cover, so the food isn’t affected. Plan somewhere sheltered for eating.

Not to cook, because the roaster is gas-fired. Let us know what’s on site.

Do we need extra food?

Quantities are based on your guest list, and we will confirm it in writing.

What affects the price in Curteis' Corner
