Wedding hog roast in Downend

Wedding hog roast in Downend, slow-roasted on site

After hours of dancing, guests are hungry. Hog roast rolls with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling do exactly that, and they’re easy to eat with a drink in hand. For barn and farm weddings and the main wedding meal, we can cook rotisserie chicken, new potatoes and crackling.

Near Downend, weddings are often in fields, barns or gardens. A hog roast is made for that: no kitchen, just level ground and cover. Let us know about access and ground. Plates come as standard, with china available if you’d like it, at an extra cost.

Some venues add a fee for outside caterers, so check before booking. We will work with the venue on access and the cooking spot.

For events on land you do not own, such as a park or field, the landowner needs to agree to cooking and vehicles. Sort that first.

Choosing a hog roast caterer

Downend: your questions answered

Do you cater at venues in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about cooking and vehicles, so check with yours. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

We are gathering after a service at Church of St Mary: can you cater?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Churches rarely have space for a hog roast, so the food is normally elsewhere. Send us the address.

What’s included?

Roast pork carved into soft rolls with sage and onion stuffing, apple sauce and crackling. You can add lamb, chicken, vegetarian and vegan options, salads, coleslaw and potatoes.

Do you leave the area tidy?

We clear the serving area and pack away, and leave the area tidy.

Can we add a second roast?

Lamb and chicken are both available as a second option.

How soon do you get booked up?

The earlier the better for popular dates. But do ask even at short notice: fill in our quote form.

How much does a hog roast cost?

Numbers, menu and travel decide the price. Tell us your date and we will send a price.

Do you need power or water?

The roaster runs on gas, so we don’t need mains power to cook. A socket nearby is useful for lighting.

Should I cook it myself?

We also hire out the hog roast machine for confident cooks. You do the roasting and carving; we’ll confirm what comes with it when you ask.

You could roast a hog yourself, but it’s a long day’s work, from setting up and lighting the roaster to carving. With us catering, you get to be a host, not a cook.

How it works

Serving is straightforward: the chef carves and the team serves, and sides go out at the same time. When everyone has eaten, we clear up and leave the spot tidy. In Downend, midsummer sunset is about 9:25pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:10pm, so evening food is often carved in daylight in June and July. For autumn and winter weddings, when it’s dark by about 4:00pm in December, plan lighting at the carving station.

  1. We start with your date, venue, numbers and running order.
  2. You get a check on the date and venue, and a quote.
  3. We agree arrival, cooking spot and serving times with you and your venue.
  4. We cook through the day and serve right on cue.
  5. We clear away once everyone has eaten.

Getting ready for the day

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Keep the spot clear of buildings, marquee walls and overhanging branches
  • Send final numbers in good time

Planning help

What comes off the roaster

Roast pork

The hog roasts slowly for hours, so the meat is tender and juicy, and it is carved fresh as people come up.

Spit-roast lamb

Lamb roasted on the spit is a lovely alternative to pork, and handy for anyone who doesn’t eat pork.

How we price a hog roast for your wedding

Your quote depends on:

  • Menu choices and extras
  • How easy it is to reach the spot
  • The number of people
  • Distance from us

Extras such as lamb, chicken, more sides or china crockery add to the cost, so each one is itemised. Keeping it simple keeps it affordable.

Getting an accurate quote

To check the date and the space, we’ll need:

  • Your date and serving time
  • Where the event is
  • Rough numbers
  • Any extras, such as lamb, chicken or china

Getting a quote is simple: date, place, numbers and serving time. You’ll get a clear quote listing what’s included. Fill in our quote form.

Planning for dietary needs

A little planning helps everyone eat safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Ask for gluten-free rolls for coeliac guests
  • Put a dietary question on the invitation
  • Count non-pork eaters, so we can add lamb, chicken or vegetarian options
  • Give final numbers in good time

Give us your venue coordinator’s details, so we can sort the cooking spot and timings with them.

Lamb alongside the pork gives guests a choice.

  • Roasted on site for several hours, outdoors under cover
  • Our chef carves the pork, with stuffing, apple sauce and crackling on the side
  • Not just pork: spit-roast lamb, chicken and vegetarian choices
  • Served by our staff at the time you choose, then cleared away
