DIY versus a catered hog roast

A DIY hog roast suits a relaxed party where someone enjoys cooking. For bigger or more formal events, catering takes the pressure off.

Full catering or machine hire? Catered means we do everything: roasting, carving, serving and clearing. With hire only, you do the cooking yourself.

How it works

When we arrive, we set up the roaster on the agreed spot, put the cover up and start the roast. It then roasts slowly for several hours, worked back from your serving time. For a summer wedding in Muddles Green, the sun sets at about 9:15pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, so evening food is frequently carved in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We agree timings with your venue coordinator.
  4. The hog roasts through the afternoon; our chef carves on cue.
  5. Our staff serve and clear, then we leave quietly.

Preparing for the day

  • Choose a level, open spot outdoors for the roaster
  • Name a contact for the day
  • Make sure we can wheel the roaster to the spot

Before you choose a spot

A hog roast cooks outdoors for hours, so the spot matters, and a little planning goes a long way:

  • A safe distance from marquee walls, buildings and trees
  • A short walk from the serving station to the guests
  • A level spot near, but not too near, the marquee

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.
