Sprat's Down: your questions answered

Can you cater after a service at St George?

Yes, at a home, hall or venue nearby with an outdoor spot for the roaster. Food is generally served at the reception venue rather than the church. Send us the address.

Which station is closest to Sprat's Down?

Hamble station, about 4 miles north of the centre.

What do you need from us on the day?

A clear, level cooking spot, a route to wheel the equipment in and a contact for the day. We’ll bring the rest.

Do you serve the food?

You don’t need anyone else: we carve, serve and tidy up.

Do you bring plates?

Plates come as standard. China crockery is available on request and quoted separately.

What if our venue has its own caterer?

Your venue decides: some welcome outside caterers, others do not. We will talk to them about the cooking spot.

Can you be flexible on serving time?

Within reason, we can. Keep us posted on the day and we will fit around changes.

How far ahead should we book?

Summer Saturdays and December book up first. Quieter dates can frequently be booked at shorter notice. Send your date and we will check.

Planners, venues and businesses

If you are organising for someone else, whether you’re a planner, a PA or on a committee, tell us who our contact on the day will be. We will keep you both updated.

Prices and what affects them

The price comes down to:

  • How long the roast and service take
  • Busy dates such as summer Saturdays
  • The number of people
  • The menu and extras such as lamb or chicken

UK price guides vary widely: roughly £10 a head for a simple roll, rising past £20 with more included. We quote every event individually, with everything listed.

Getting an accurate quote

To get the best quote, send us:

  • The date and time of the event
  • Any venue rules
  • Rough numbers
  • Which meats and sides you’d like

The quickest way to get a price is to tell us the date, where the wedding is and roughly how many. A picture of where the roaster could go helps us check the space. Fill in our quote form.

Should I cook it myself?

Roasting a whole hog yourself is possible, but it takes hours of attention, from early set-up to carving at the end. A catered hog roast means you can enjoy the day.

Timing is the tricky part of roasting your own: a big roast takes hours and must be cooked thoroughly. If that sounds stressful, choose the catered option.

How the day works

The roaster cooks outdoors, on a level, open spot under cover, well clear of walls, tents and trees. We will agree the spot with you beforehand. In Sprat's Down, evening wedding food frequently coincides with dusk: sunset is around 8:55pm in late May, 9:20pm at midsummer and 7:10pm in late September. A few lights by the serving table help guests and photos alike.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We confirm the date and the venue and send a price.
  3. We fit timings around your running order.
  4. We roast during the day, then carve at the agreed time.
  5. We serve, tidy up and slip away.

Preparing for the day

  • Ask about allergies and dietary needs beforehand
  • Confirm numbers ahead of the day
  • Measure the narrowest gate or passage

Crackling

The skin crisps up over the hours of roasting, and we break it up so everyone gets a piece.

Roast pork

The hog roasts slowly for hours, so the meat is tender and juicy, and our chef carves it to order.

Why a carved hog roast beats a buffet

Compared with a three-course plated meal, a hog roast is more relaxed and frequently better value. It still feels special. The price depends on numbers, the menu and how long we serve, plus travel and access. Every booking is different, so we quote each one individually.

What you get with us

  • Staff to serve, so you do not have to
  • Choices for people who do not eat pork
  • The classics: stuffing, apple sauce and crackling
  • Timed around your day
